THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON TUESDAY. December 6, 1881. CROSBY §. NOTES. Editor. The Evening Star kas a reauiar, permanent. bona fide daity cirealation more than treble t of any other daily paper pablished in Washington. and equal to that of all the ether daily papers here ndded together. ‘Tux Stan office is connected with the Teipphione Ex- Chence. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail Bnd ctherwiee, news, or any information or busmess fan be sent day or nicht, free of change. Owing to the pressure of advertising, Taz Star Will be issued again to-morrow in doubie- sheet or elght-page form of fifty-six columns. Last Suturday’s double shect contained 170 new advertisements, and the circulation (printed and Sold) was 21,435. - —— “The Best is Always the Cheapest.” ‘Those who have holiday or other goods to sell, and those who wish to make any fact or want known t the public, should bear the above fact tn mind, and remember that Tue EVENING STAR goes Into more homes, houses, factories, stores, shops, Offices, and places of business, and fs read every gy by more peopie, than all the other daily papers fm Washington added togetner. SE One of the tmportant questions devolving upon ‘the coming Congress for settlement is in relation Yo the tneumbency of the presidential office by the Vice President In the event of the tna ity of the President. ‘The case of the iliness of the late Preal- | Gent Garfield tiiustrated the Indefiniteness of the constitutional provision on this point. It ts neces | Bary for Congress to preseribe by law what shail constitute inability of the President, and thus Jeave no room to question the right of the Vice Prestient to assume the executive chair under certain circumstances and conditions. Congress Should also provide some deflnite and distinct Method for counting the electoral vote and deter- Mining questions of contest arising over such Yotes. This should be attended to early that a law may be framed and put in operation before i BRA P ALAIS ROYAL, 1117-1119 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, ax 401-403 TWELFTH STREET. PALAIS ROYAL. a6 According to the signal service reports, It was colder at 7 o'clock this morning in Washington than at any other city in the United States at the Same hour, the mercury standing at 29 degrees. At Eastport, Me., in the extreme northeast section Of the country, the record was 31; at Boston It Was 30; and at St. Paul, Minn., in the extreme northwest, It was 32 degrees. Only one station re- corded a lower temperature than Washington, and that was Fort Buford, in Montana—2 degrees. Another singular fact was that by a rise of the lnercury tn the north and a fallin the south the temperature in the northern and southern states ‘Was nearly the same. os Report has ft that Senator Mahone will be Present in person at the opening of the Virginia legislature, to-morrow, in order to adjust the Oficial slate in a way to give the respective claims of the republicans and the readjusters an equitable show. This will bea difficult task, but Mahone has shown himself a good deal of a tac- tician, and If anybody can manage to make both ivistons of the coalition party happy in the dis- tribution of the effiees, he fs the man to do tt ‘The aliotunent of the U.S. senatorship will be one Of the troublesome features of this adjustment. Within a few days the Vinzinla republicans ha’ shown some uneasiness, lest they should not get @ share of the offices, proportionate to their largely preponderant vote. The senatorship is one of the things they think they are entitled to under this claim. : —___~»—_____ Guiteau is to-day laboring again most industrt- ousiy to show that he fs an irresponsible “era Dut the dri:t of his effort in t s becoming | more transparent with eseh repetition, and th effect fs to cause many who have been disposed to funk him too insane to hang to abandon tuat, theory.
