ALLEGED ILLEGAL FER IN A PENSION CASE. Yesterday afternoon Egbert G. Barnard, a clerk In the Treasury department, was arrested by one %¢ the marshal’s officers on the charge of having, as attorney for James M. Morrison, formerly oi company D, U. 8. colored Tecelved an un- jawiul fee ($160) for prosecuting the claim for an in- valid pension, ainounting to $200. The charge 1s also tnade that the act is unlawful under Sec. 5,498. of the Revised Statutes, he being a goverament clerk. He was taken hefore Commissioner Bundy and gave ball for a hearing to-day. THE HEARING TO-DAY. The case was called by Commissioner Bundy at hoon to-day—Mr. R. Coyle, assistant district at- torney, for the government, and Mrs. Lockwood for the defendant. Mr. Albert Miller testified that Barnard was a clerk in the Treasury departinent. After examining the application, Mr. Miller tes- tifled that the handwriting looked like that of Bar- ard, but he would not say that it was. Several letters in reference to the claim he testified Were in Barnard’s handwriting, among them one of January 29, 18792 -one Of February. 5, 1870: one of March éth, 1879; one of March ‘23d, 1879; affidavit of Wm.
