STILL UNDER CONSIDERATION BY GENERAL WRIGHT. The report of Colonel Abert, civil engineer, U.S. A., upon the bids recently opened for the construc- tion of a free bridge across the Potomac, has been sent to General Wright, chief of engineers. AS 15 known the only bid wich comes within the ap- propriation fs that of the Corrugated Iron Com- pany for the erection of a bridge at_ the “Three Sisters.” “The question is whether the company will build a bridge of suflictent strain resistance under the bid offered by them. This question General Wright is now having carefully exarained, He does not wish to let the contract to any one unless It Is first ascertulned that the bridge will be strong enoush to resist all strain that may be Put upon it He | would preter, to awarding the contract for an _insufiictent bridge, that the matter be returned to Congress for an appropriation tn an amount that will build a bridge about the substantiallty of which there shall be no doubt. It 1s conceded that the Corru- gated tron company would build as good a brilge 48 could be put up, with the accomp:niment of ap- proaches, which are also required, for the amount approprizted—$140,000. But whether that bridge would be satisfactory is now tue question whlch is being dealt with in careful examination and calculations. es Society Notes.
