The number of new advertisements printed In Octobe: the history of the paper. Up to to-day it is 2,181. — ‘The elections next month In Virginia and Missis- Sippt attract a larger share of pnolic attention, even, than that In New York. In Mississipp! a man who has been a steadfast democrat, and who, to fact, now holds an office to which he was elected As a democrat, heads the fuston ticket. The con— test against democratic rule m that state is not hompered with repudiation, as is the case in Vir- ginta, and therefore men who earnestly desire a political change In the sonth, can give ft their sup- Port and co-operation unreservedly. The move- Inent In Misstssippt has brought to its support many white citizens of prominence, whose devo- tion to the state and her interests cannot fairly be finpgned. The candidates of the fusion party are mostly democrats, or rather men who have been tive members of the democratic party ever since tie rebefion. They believe the time has arrived for a dissotmtion of the solid south, and they see thedmportance, if not necessity, of a diviston of the | White voters of the state upon questions of state and local government. ‘The necessity, real or tmeginery, which tmduced the white men to vote together to prevent the domination of thi colored race has resulted tn political tyranny. The whites who have ruled under that dispensation tegin to believe they possess a divine right to power. Those of the democratic party who wish to dispute this and assert their independence have joined in the support of the fusion movement, and theugh the chances are in favor of democratic suc- cess this year that will not destroy the Independ- ent party. It wil! rally and grow stronger. In Virginia the taint of repudiation drives many an independent roter from the coalitfonists. ‘The Litter are pledged to a forcfbie readjustment of the State debt ff they can obtain the power. Arbitrary Teadjustment is repudiation, and that outweighs all the good that might be achieved through a de- feat of the “Bourbon” demecracy. ae It Attorney General MacVeagh would hearken to Nne publie volee he would consent to remain in pfliee and conduct the star route prosecutions. Having been intimately associated with Post- master General James in all the steps he has ‘taken In these cases, Mr. MacVeagh is familiar with the plans, purposes and methods of that official, and could doubtless render more efficient service than anew Attorney General. If the star route cases are to be prosecuted at this term of court there Is not time enough left for a new appointee t» acqnire that thorough knowledge of them which the present incumbent possesses. Mr. MacVeagh 1s quoted as having stated that there was evidence enough to conviet, and that the prosecutions could only fail through bad management, or lack of moral support on the part of the administration. ‘The administration gives its entire support and co-operation, and is earnestly desirous that jnstice may be done. There‘ore, it only remains to prop- evly conduct the cases, and no one can do this so Well as the Attorney General. It ts his plain duty Bot to abandon the mission he has entered upon. Should he do so he must expect to fail very much | 4h public esteem. oe The democratic leaders in Virginia generally a@imit that Senator Mahone has managed his can- Yass with consummate ability and therein, they sy, lies his only hope of success. In the first place, Mahone is a thorough politician, looking only to results and trusting nothing to possibilities. He has the confidence of his followers, both read- Justers and republicans, and it isonly necessary for him to direct to be obeyed. He has organized com- puctly and efficiently all over the state. ‘The dem- oerats claim a majority of the qualified voters, but the difieulty fs to get them out on election day. ‘There ts a spirit of over-contidence prevailing 8 song the democrats which will work disastrously {) themn if not evercome. Their speakers and orgaus have so persistently claimed the victory Chat many voters Uhink it Is to be won without any Spectal effort. At present the democratic leaders are exerting all their powers to dispel this over- confidence and convince their party that success can only be atteined by polling every vote it has. ‘The indications now, within less than a fortnight Of the election, are that the democrats will elect thetr state ticket if they can bring out their ‘The legisiature is very doubtful and will be close, the control of it probably resting in the hands of the few repabiicans who wilt be elected. ——— ‘The Balttmore American thinks Mayor Whyte Will not “march to machine muste;” that while he ‘Will not provoXe a Hyht with the ring majority in the councils he wi not allow himself to be dic- titi. He thinks, however, that there will be ho Mght,—that a majority of the members are his friends, and that there will be no suspension of friendly rekttions. There is a feeling in Baltimore, however, thet there will be a collision between Mayor Whyt: and the councils should he under- & Ke, as It ts sald he will do, to mini the promises he gave during the campaign. The old line or Sth ring democrats, who first nominated htm for moor and east one-fourth of the democratic vote, sty they will receive at least one-fourth of the @Melal patronage. Should the ring refuse tocon- cede this claim then it isexpected there will be trouble. —eo——__ Editor Hatton, of the Burlington Hawkeye, en- tors the office of First Assistant Postmaster Gen- eral with that independence and freedom from ob- gation which entitie him to feet that be ts his own Dow He did not beg for the office, never asked any Senator for his vote for confirmation, and lade n0 sort of promise or pledge to any- bedy. When indirectly threatened with oppost- tio, because of an editorial he had written, he franzly evowed the outhorship and declared that Usier the same circumstances he would write tt acvin. Mr. Hatton is a self-made man, having Worsed Limself up tn that superior school of ex- P rence, printing office, from “devil” to pro- prietor. ee ‘The greenback party cat so insignificant a figure the lute Ohio election that it has been over- looked tn the returns. Out of a total vote of €23,000 the greenbackers polled only 7.00 As luo gave birth to the greenbick “idee” and nur- turea it to all the development it ever attained, thts pitiont rtin an important state election Iney be regarded as the death-wail of the party. ‘The greembuck inembers of the next Congress will Prodably consider thelr constiuency too simall to | ent.tie them to separate representation. These Moumbers will probabiy go to the republleam or democratic party, as their inclinations and tastes Fespectively prompt. —————— ‘The appointment of Judge Folger as the head of | the tinaneial department of the government meets With very general approval The prevailing feel- ing is that he ts safe man te entrust with the re- Spensidle duties of the Treasury. In every public Prsition w which Le has been hitherto called he hes won the approval of those he served, and he hes only left one place of trust to take a higher one.
