In fact, all the leaders and speakers of the readjuster party make it a point ‘to assert and reassert their democracy upon every stump. The very causes which Induce Messrs. Jorgensen and Dezendort to give their adhesion to ™“ the coalition are leulated to drive democratic voters from it. T! Tetts have maintained sharp competition with Gould's Wabash system, and the latter the idea of strangling this competition b; from it a valusble and essential part of its line. By a trick an injunction was obtained in Cincin- Rati to restrain the B. and O. people from votin: at the then pending election for directors of the O. and mpany, certain shares. This was within a few hours of the election, and the Gould men flattered themselves that their trick would not be detected until too late. Tilden’s method of dealing with K 18 thus proved after years of kicking and bolting on the Tammany. But it is hardly to be supposed that Kelly will give the state ticket an enthust Support. Still, his surrender to party authority in- creased the st h of the democracy and tt Prospects of success in the pending canvass. The Tepublicans are making fair progress also towards unity, and by the time of tion the two parties Wiilprobably confront each other with pretty sold ranks. There was nothing left for Kelly but to Yield or to Join the republl:ans. He had no other alternative, and he know his followers well enough ‘to realize that he could not carry them Into the re- publican party. The loss of patronage deprived the Tammany boss of the only means he had of keeping his following together. The result proves Low thoroughly Tilden tunderstands New York city polities, and how accurately he measures Kelly and the Tummanyites. — +e The Biair-Wilson letters have again become Prominent in the Virginia canvass through a con- fession of Wilson, who gave them out to t nO crats that they were forgeries. Wilson's confes- sion 1s a rambling, disconnected, incoherent scrawl, without any point, except to stamp the author as unworthy of credit. In it he first charges that the Blair letters were stolen from his Pocket white he was drunk and “coppied,” and in almost the same sentence he alleges that they were forged. He admits in the same document that he agreed to surrender the letters to the democrats for $50. The confession shows that Wilson is not to be elieved, and that no man’s character ought to be assutled upon his testimony. ——_+-+— It was supposed that the project of a World’s fair dead a8 the kindred plan of 3 at Boston had died the New Yorkers, but the Boston Herald declai that the purpose has not been abandoned, and that the probabilities are in favor of its being carried out The Hub people have the reputation of ac- complishing almost anything they undertake, and fm this matter of gettiug up a world’s fair on short motice, “if anybody kin they kin.” ——E ‘The first number of the American Register, a ‘Weekly democratic paper to be published in Wash- ington, made its appearance to-day.
