THE EVENING STARU: ASHINGTON, “d-5 OCTOBER 12, 99981. Editor. ‘The Evening Star has a reguiar, permanent, bona fide deity circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal te that of all the daity papers here added tegether. —— THE STAR office is connected with the Tele- phone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of churze. The pacific intentions of the Gladstone ad- Ministration towards Ireiand are manifested wherever a favorable opportunity is offered, and there is evidence of a growing disposition on the part of the Irish people to meet and respond to the government's good will. Archbishop Croke, who was @ boid and able champion of land league, has taken conservative grounds in behalf of a fair and honest test of the land bill. ‘The archbishop is supported in his position by Bishops, priests and laymen of high standing, and the result of their efforts is the develop- ment of a healthy public sentiment, which is Willingto allow the English government an op- portunity to settle the Irish question. It may be that the land bill will prove as complete a failure as it’s opponents predict, but it was con- ceived and enacted with honest purposes and it should have an honest trial. If it shall prove a failure, then the position of the Irish people in reuewing a demand for their rights will be greatly strengthened, by having accorded to the bill a chance to prove its merits as well as it’s demerits. Should captious opposition prevent uch a fair test of the measure, then the ques- tion of its power to havedone what was claimed for it by it's friends will always be an open one. Undoubtedly Archbishop Croke, who has proven himseif a friend of his people, appreciates the force of this point. ———— An application has been filed in the state de- partment of Pennsylvania for a charter for the Pneumatic railroad company, of Philadelphia. The company proposes the construction of an underground railroad to extend for flve miles through or rather under the central portion of the city, to be operated on the pneumatic prin- ciple. Capital to the amount of $45,000 ($9,000 per mile) has been subscribed, and the company, in its application, asserts its purpose to con- struct and operate the road in good faith. The paid up capital, however. will have to be largely increased dver the amount mentioned in the ap- Plication before much can be done towards put- ting the enterprise in operation. Forty-five thousand dollars will not carry an underground railroad very far. ee The New York Erening Post (republican) ad- vises Senator Mahone to leave his financial ideas and principles behind him when next he goes to New York city to speak to business men. It assures Mr. Mahone that the merchants and bankers of the commercial metropolis willnever Tecognize a system which makes it the “first duty” of the debtor to ascertain how much he owes and the “second duty” to decide how much he can or will pay. This is not the system upon which New York merchants have grown Fich, and the chances are that if they consent to Feeosnize it as rizht and proper their riches will soon be transferred to their debtors’ pockets. Mahone’s address tothe Union League Club evidently did his cause more harm than good in Borthern business and financial circles. te ans have carried Ohio by a very and certainly no observer of politieal signs can be surprised at the result. As usnal, there was a good deal of talk of demo- eratie success, but all the signs of victory were onthe other side. The next election in which the largest degree of public interest is felt oc- curs in Virginia, next month. The indications are that the democrat& tiere will elect their state ticket by a majority running up into the thousands, but the legislature is in doubt, be- cause the readjusters have a majority of the holding-over senators. a ee Boss Kelly, of New York city, has been denied recognition by the state democratic convention, and Boss MtLaughiin, of Brooklyn, is confronted * with an independent democratic local ticket, headed by Gen. Slocum for mayor. The bosses are defied at every turn in both parties, and the seepter of political power has been wrested from them. In Philadelphia the control of muni- cipal affairs is in the hands of the citizens, and the rings are all demoralized, while a vigorous fight is being waged in the state against the po- Ltical machine. The republi ——___~«»_____ On Saturday next subscriptions to the Mrs. Garfield fund will be closed and on the follow- ing Monday a list of the subscribers will be pub- lished. The total sum so far subscribed is a little in excess of $335.00, and it is not improb~ able that it will reach $350,909 by the end of the week_ ‘TH GENUINE BROWN'S GINGER B KNOWN TO DO ITS WORK! GUINNIP, DAY & CO. o12 A N EXPLANATION. ‘We have been occasionally imposed upon in the em- Boyment of Cutters by their being endorsed by one of the many fine Tailoring Establishments of New York. ‘Towards the close of last season one of our firm visited New York, and was there introduced to gentleman who bore the very highest reputation as » Cutter and Designer. We were not willing, however, to allow this to cause us to make an engagement with him, We of- fered to try him, and if satisfactory engage him per- manently. After four months experience no misfit has been produced. We take pleasure in stating that we now have THE BEST CUTTER THAT WE HAVE EVER HAD IN OUR EMPLOY. Combine this fact with the Magnificent Stock we offer you to select from, and you will see that it is to your advantage to place your orders with us. None but the best are produced, and no Garments finished without being tried on before finish - ing; and when finished not allowed toleaye the premises if not perfect in every detail. A.
