The need of a general hospital may not be obvious to the average citizgn, but it is well known to physi- cians and to all who have been active in local charities Large numbers of our indigent sick are regularly sent tothe Washington Asylum, and still larger numbers, who ought to be | T%E OPENING treated in hqspital instead of at home, refuse the enforced association with the criminal Classes and supposed disgrace which going to the asylum infulves. STRAUS’, LAST SATURDAY Being attended with success, willing to unite their services without pay, in | WILL BE CONTINUED FOR A FEW DAYS LONGER. order to insury it the best medical and surgical skill this District affords. The reciprocal ad- vantages which medical colleges and hospitals derive from e&ch other are easily understood. Without patients with whom to illustrate their elinical lectures, the teachers of the healing art, labor under great disadvantages, while the schools necessarily seeking the most eminent physicians and surgeons to fill their professor- ship, thus affotd the hospitals which are affil- jated with thdm the assurance of haying in con- sultation over ¢very difficult case the most skil- ful menin the profession. So well understood isthis among educated men, that patients of the highest positiof, as in therecent case of Senator Hill, seek thos hospitals of our large cities as “pay patients,” because of their obvious super- jority over home treatment. But the question before the meeting Wednes- day night will Qot be so much the need of, as how to éstabli: @ general hospital. number of the jnost eminent of our physicians endeavored at the last session to secure an ap- propriation froia Congress for this object, but without success, partly because the movement zun too Jate in the short session. But a good deal of sdntiment was created in its favor among members of both houses, and favorable action from the District committee of the Senate was obtained. These physicians have continued their organization with the intention of trying again the coming winter The trustees of the Soldiers’ and Sitilors’ Orphans’ Home—a charity which has expjred because the orphans have grown up—hav necessary enalding legislation from Congress | they will convef their property, the proceeds to be used as a budding fund for a general hospital. The trustees were distinctly averse to this fund being used to bay property for the government, holding that Cohgress ought to purchase a suit- abie site for the hospital. The Orphans’ Home Property, when sold, would produce the larger part 6f the sum which would be needed fo erect hospital buildings that would be @ credit to the national capital. Ifthe people aid property owners of the Dis- triet will now cme forward and by their volun- tary contributipns swell this fund, for the specific purposejof establishing a Garfield Me- morial Hospital, there is little doubt that Con- gress can be induced to do its part. The his- tory of the admitable charitable institutions we now mic if which to be fairly comprehen- sive only lack thp addition of a general hospi- tal—is that the gpvernment has generally been found willing to belp those who show a disposi- tion to help thenSelves. When an institution has been fully laujched by private effort, Con- gress comes forw4rd to do itsfairshare. Finally, W the hospital meéting is to be productive of good it must not jailow itself to be drawn off into discussions of questions of site or of details ofany sort. Asa correspondent of THE STAR Wrote the other day, “first catch your hospital.” Questions of detai! will be premature until that of ways and means has been met, and even then they will have to Le settled by a committee and not in mass meeti The object of the assem- blage to-morrow tight should, therefore, be to see what can be doe toward raising money for the proposed memtorial, and to create a good committee of live tepresentative men and ‘ead- ing physicians to follow up the work. — 2 ‘The general impréssion amongst the Senators is that the extra sdssion will last but a short time, and they are| making arrangements for | temporary lodgings! at hotels; deferring prepa- Tations for permanent board or housekeeping until the commencetuent of the regular session. s* JOHN'S COLLE {LATE INSTITUTE, VekMGNT AVENUE.
