John Higginson, of No. 1242 20th street, yes- terday made a desperate attempt to commit suicide, which may yet prove effectual. He has resided with his wife for some time in the house mentioned, occupying the third floor. Their life has been peaceable and apparently happy. They are hard-working people, and their strong attachment for each other has attracted the no- tice ofneighbors. Yesterday afternoon, at three o'clock, Mrs Higginson left hometo make a visit, the husband declining to go with her, on the ground that he did not feel very well. After her departure, he made deliberate and elaborate preparations for self-destruction. Getting a quantity of rags, he placed them conyeni- ly at the side of a rocking-chair. Then curins a razor, he seated hfmself in the chair and drew the keen blade across his throat, mak- ing a terrible gash; severing the wind-pipe and breaking a piece out of the blade. He then leaned over so that the streaming blood fell on the pile of rags. His condition was not discov- ered until his wife returned a little after seven Dr. Sothoron was called in and dressed the terrible wound. Later in the night Higgin- -Son was removed to the Providence Hospital in a very precarious condition. He said that he had had enough, and did not care te repeat the act. He gave no explanation of his conduct, has been drinking to an unusual extent lately. notte neces DEEDs IN Fee have been recorded as follows: W. L. Bramhall et al. to A. C. Se A MAN Dancerevsiy Snot py A GiRL.—A colored girl, about 17 years old, named Eliza Till- man, was charged in the Police Court this morn- ing with assault and battery with intent to kill @ young colored man named Daniel Dickson, who stated to Officer McNamara, of the county precinct. that last Saturday he went to this girl’s house, on Meridian Hill, in the county, and rap- Ee at the door, and she came to the door and e asked her for a drink of water, and she re- plied “I ain't got any water. but I'll give you something else.” She went into the house and returned with an old “pepper-box” pistol loaded with powder and shot, and stuck it in his face and fired, tearing one of his cheeks nearly en- tirely away. Defendant’s counsel, Mr. 0. 8. B. Wall, apppeared for defendant and asked that bail be fixed in the case. Mr. Blunt, the prosecut- ing attorney, said the wound was a dangerous one and there was some danger of Dickson's in- juries proving fatal. The court said that under these circumstances he could not release the de- fea on bail. The case was continued for one week. —— A GARFIELD MEMORIAL SERVICE was held by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union at Masonic Temple yesterday afternoon, with a full attendance, and Mrs. Roach in the chair.
