He was the peoples’ Presi dent In the truest, broadest sense of the term. The north, the south, the east and the west join hands and mingle tears over the grave of Gen. Gartield. One of the most touching tributes to the memory of the late President, and an evi- dence too of the universal respect and rever- ence felt for him, is the pains the poor and the humble have taken to drape their lowly houses in mournii The little shanty Where food is searee and want is ever-present. is draped with ail the resources at the command of the poor occupants. There is a disposition now apparent, even among the medical critics who have been so severe in their comments upon Dr. Biiss and his associates, to admit that, in the light of the developments of the autopsy and the frightful character of the wound, great skill was displayed in the management of the case. One of the professional critics who insisted that the ball should have been cut out, now pronounces the wound to have been ne- cessarily fatal inthe end. At the Meeting of the Baltimore Merchants’ and Manu- facture: tion yesterday to take action in regard to the President’s death, one of the Speakers commenced by enquiring: “Is there a man within the sound of my voice whose. heart is not encysted in a solemn grief this morning?” Another stated that the virtues of the deceased would be “embalmed” in the hearts of his countrymen forever. +o The manifestations of grief over er the death of President Gartleld, noted throughout the land, @re scarcely more universal than the expressions of confidence in the disposition and ability of his successor to carry out the grand adminis- tive policy so satisfactorily entered upon.
