a aa __ THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, TUESDAY. SEPTEMBER 13, 1881. CROSBY S. NOYES. The Evening Star has a regular, permanen: bonx fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daity paper published In Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily pa; ere added together. ‘Tue STAx office is connected with the Tele- phone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. Persons leaving the city for the summer ean have THE STAR mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the address changed as often as desired, The Next House. The result of the special congressional election held in the second Maine district yesterday adds another to the republican members of the next House. Not counting the four vacancies existing from New York the wer House of the Forty-seventh Congress now stands: 144 repub- Heans, 133 democrats, 9 greenbackers, 2 readjus- ters (from Virginia}, and one independent repub- Hean (Smith, of Brooklyn), making a present membership of 289 members. The four New York vacancies will be filled in November. Should the republicans elect three out of this four they will then have just the number of votes requisite to organize the House—147. It seemsto be generaily conceded that the republicans will elect successors to Messrs. Miller and Lapham. The democrats will no doubt elect a successor to the late Fernando Wood, and they claim that they will send a member to fill the seat vacated by Minister Morton. Should they carry both these districts that will leave the republicans with only 146 members, but it is claimed that Smith, of Brooklyn, will vote for republican organiza- tion, and that would give them the additional | vote necessary to make a majority of the whole House. There are tive greenback members who wi formerly republicans, and who, it is rea- sonable to suppose, will vote with that party on the question of organization, as against the democrats. They are Brumm, of Pennsylvania, and Rice, Hazeitine, Ford and Burroughs, of , of Texas, another greenbacker, Missouri. Jon: thouzh formerly a demoerat, is now a bitter op- ponent of that party, and would be more likely to vote against it than with it. Ladd and Murch, of Maine, and Moszrove, of Penn- sylvania, would no doubt vote with the democrats in the question of organization should it be a contest between those two parties. What the two Virginia readjusters may do there Is no means of telling yet. The result of the coming election in Virginia will probably have consider- able influence in determining their political status in the next Congress. The greenbackers | make up the element of uncertainty in relation | to the orzanization of the next House. Their | leaders emphatically deciare that they intend to make a caucus nomination for Speaker and to stand by that nomination to the last. Then there is a good deal of talk of a coalition of demeerats and greenbackers, but sneha combinution could not win unless the rei ers join it, provided the repub- din electing two out of the four meinbers to be chosen in New York. Should the democrats capture either Miller's or Lapham’s district, (a thing not very probable.) it might be fatal to republican ascendency in the next Hou as it would enable the opposition by combina- tion to muster a majority. The chances are fa- vorable to republican ors is Ekely to be so close that a sudden death or eaze of illness on the part of a member might upset ull calculations. = The eiection yest aine, by over 4,000 majority over candidate, testifies to the popu- larity of Mr. Dingiey and to the fact that the greenback craze is rapidly on the wane in the Dirige State. A gesperite effort was made to defeat Dingley by inducing the democratic can- didate to withdraw in order to concentrate the opposition on the greenback candidate, but many of the democrats, who have sickened of coalition with the soft money crowd, refused to be sold out and delivered on this occasion, and they either voted for Dingley yesterday or de- clined to vote at all. Mr. Dingley is the editor of the Lewiston Journal, one of the ablest and best newspapers in New England. While not as brilliant a debater as Blaine or Frye, he is a log- jeal, foreible speaker, and he will supply his fall proportion of the ability requisite to keep up the reputation for strength maintained for #0 many years in both houses of Congres$ by the Maine delegation. +e» ___ The news from Long Branch that the Presi- dent has, at his own request, been removed from his bed toa reclining chair, shows that he isnot at all in the dying mood. The people still have faith that his grit will carry him through. Wy oopwanp & LOTHRO! wa. .-PENNSYLYANIA AVENUE...
