__ THE EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON, BERR 12, 1881. . Editor. ‘The Evening Star has a requinr, permanent, bona fide daily cirentation more tan treble ef any other daity paper published lv Washington, ard equal to that of all the Sther daily papers here added tawether. THR Stan office fs connected with the Tel phone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charxe. The President’ Condition. The news from the Lresident to-day whfle not entirely reassuring is much more hopeful thaa the reports sent out from Long Branch last | Right. The morning bulletin states that the President passed an unusually good night; that zh was less and the expectoration mate- diminished, while the respiration had fallen to 18. In view of the alarming reports concerning the condition of his lungs. the state- ment by the surgeons that there is less cough and expectoration and slower respiration will be accepted as hopeful signs. Had the oppression upon his lungs increased, the theory of the development of a dangerous ab- scess there from blood-potsoning would have been alarmingly _ strengthened. That danzer Is by no means over, but the chances are, again, that the surgeons may be able to deal as successfully with the new com- Plication as they did with the trouble with the Parotid gland. It is probeble that the wet Weather at Long Branch may have had an un- favoral ble effect upon his lungs, and that the e te sunshine and clear air to-day will give him relief. It is probable also that his visita- tion of fever yesterday was but a recurrence of the weekly Sunday fever he has had ever since he was shot. Of course it is a great disap- pointment to find that the President's progress to recovery is not as continnous as was promised by his improyement last week, but we ought surely to have learned by this time that pull-rocks of this sort are to be looked for Periodically and should not cause discourage- meat. —— How to Deal with Train-Robbers, In the history of the last train robbery occurs ®& sentence which contains food for reflection. ~The train-men offered a show of resistance, but, being unarmed. could do nothing.” It seems the law affords very little protection for travel- ers, particularly ** Out West.” The most it can do will be to attempt to punish the “offenders,” provided they arecanght. It isnot to be be- lieved that twelve bighwaymen, however well equipped for the business, could reb a train if the train hands and passenzers were properly pt in the ue of their weapons; ance, treachery existed among the ‘or is it likely said robbers would | such odds, if they knew a would be encountered; not- withstanding they have the advantage of a bold nd a preeoncerted plan. 3 like the Winston affair, the rob- bers aeted upon the supposition that everybody would be nnarmed, and consequently helpless © mn: —more so, since it was not possible even to run away. The moral of it all is that people must learn to protect themselves, and that travelers should always go efficiently | FINISH WITHOUT BEING NECESSITATED TO | especially if they are unfortunate enough I to pass throuzh the state of Mis- | It is not at all surprising that these | 1 agents,” us they are considerately styled, | dom fail in their enterprises. Lay obliged to recognize the fact that ing in self-defence is not murder, because | there is a certain space, before any law can act, | ia which every man must protect himself. <> Not the Place for the National Capital. The of St. Louis has been making persis- tent war upon gambling for a year or more, but the keno and faro rooms continue to doa thriv- inz business. After having exhausted all the g@uthority of the city in vain, the aid of the state | Was sought. The lezisiature was induced to pass a most stringent law, making gambling a penal offense. A board of police commissioners selected from the high moral element of popula- tion was appointed to see that the law against gambling was enforced. In spite of all this, however. keno holds its own. The @wners of gambling establishments rally the Sporting fraternity around them, and notify ambitious politicians that their public career must terminate unless they give the gamblers a chance. The sports brought influence enough to bear recently to obtain a numerously signed petition, containing the names of many business Men, requesting the police board to cease their operations azainst the gamblers. There are now confined in the city jail twenty-eight persons eharged with murder, and this, it Is asserted, is @ne of the results of a very lax enforcement of the laws. +> —______ There were seventy-three business fallures in the United States and Canada last week, forty- five less than during the previous week. Of the failures fifteen occurred in the middie states, seventeen in New England, nine in the south- ern states, fourteen in the western states ten in the Pacitic coast states and eight in Can- ada and the provinces. The most important fail. ures were those of the New York SHR Manufac- turing Company, the Lawrence Worsted Mills of Massachusetts. and two mercantile firms of At- lanta and Augusta, Ga. ee The soldier Mason, who shot at Guiteau last night, se ‘o have been animated by the same petriotic zeal to distinguish himself as the slayer Of an assassin that prompted the soldier Corbett to shoot Booth, and thus cheated the gallows of its fitting work. Shooting is too honorable a @eath for criminals of the class of Booth and Guitean. They should go to the gallows with all the marks of public detestation fitting their infamy. eo Courtney made anotier failure to-day.
