THE FUNDERS EXPECT TO WIN—BUT THRY HAVE A HARD FIGHT ON HAND—MAHONE’S MEN BUST— THE CAMPAIGN IN THE VALi. | Correspondence of Tar EVENING Sran. | Wincuestar, Va., Sept. 6, 81. The drift of popular sentiment in the present political canvass certainly seems to be in favor of the democrats, or funders, as they are more | frequentiy termed here. This is very conclusive after having questioned men as I have met them as to their own political preferences and that of their neighbors respectively. The better classes of the population are undoubtedly with the funders. The merchants whose credit stands highest, and the farmer, who is spoken of as an “honest man,” will almost invariably be found among the anti-readjusters, One of the | shin lights of readjusterism not a thousand | miles from this place is aman who bought all the goods he could get on time, sold them for less than cost and swindled his creditors by closing business. There are very few, even among the best classes of Virginians, who believe the state can pay her entire debt with the rate of interest originally agreed upon. Nearly every man you meet says in substance that the cred- itors must consent to a reduction of the debt— toarefunding at lower interest; if they want | eyprecad This, it is universally believed, can accomplished without any difficult The general opinion is that the creditors will-consent to a composition very readily, whenever they | can feel assured of the payment of the reduced | a young farmer who seemed to bea type of a pretty large class. In talking with him of the | political situation he attached but little im- | portance to the debt question. He said the debt would have to be reduced before it could be paid, and that this reduction would be brought about. no matter which party might win. He said he had been one of Mahone's original sup- | porters, and had followed him into the support | of the July Hancock ticket last year, “but,” he added, “I can’t stand Mahone’s affiliations. His votes in the Senate last winter separated him from me. I am a democrat, and in my neighborhood there are many others who have left Mahone for the same reason.” The reason | assigned by this man for abandoning Mahone | will apparently influence hundreds of votes in | the Shenandoah valley at the coming election. The funders have made the most of Mahone's votes and of the efforts of himself and lieuten- ants to coax the colored peopie to his support. It must not be concluded, however, that the readjusters are not going to get votes in this section. They are working uuntiringly an and mean to poll every vote The best informed and democrats realize and frankly admit that they | have no holiday job on hand in their effort to beat Mahone. Still, the prevailing opinion is that he will be beaten by 15,000 to 25.000 ma- jority in the state. The white republicans are naturally divided. Those who are engaged in business pursuits and in farming, and who have no special interest in politics—are not after | office—will, ax a rule, stay away from the poll Of those who take an active eat in the canvass a majority are with Mahone, while some are work- ee the success of the straight democratic ticket. F. The English Physician. From the London Spectator, Perhaps there ‘would not be much risk In say- ing that the medical profession, as a whole, is | more alive than the clerical to what is new inthe | Aman can hardly be a good physician without having a considerable native share of scientific | ability; and he should also have much of the artist's sensibility to. form, color and expressive motion. The physician, besides actual accom- plishments which he Is’ likely enough to have | quite outside his vacation, is often the most | agreeable and well-informed man of the world in his very large circle. And everything con- spires at present to compel or invite the widen- ing of his horizon. To be a really —e physici aman must bea psychologist. jis does n mean that, if he finds in a case of insomnia no obvious cause for the patient’s disorder, he showd ask the unfortunate man whether he has anything on his conscience, embezzlement, for It is well known that Lord Eldon, when plain John Scott, elo; with the lady whom he married, and they ma ae all their lives. While it was very earl Nerd with them, young Mrs. fell il in Strange dion, and the local practitioner oh sent for. laving. after the usual routine, failed to make out what was the matter with this beautiful lady, he said; ‘I'm afraid, ma'am, there is something on your mind? You are not happy with your husband?” This was bad prac tice. Mrs. Scott had much spirit and natural eloquence, and there was nothing the mat: with Mr. Scott, who was both tall and ‘athleticg but the muse will not sing the dismissal of that doctor. The anecdote only illustrates, in pass- ing, the sense in which the physician must not be a psychologist. | | the guest of get. coolent headed | conditions under which the work has to be done. | Det Five races were ron on the Coney Islane Jockey club course at Gravesend yesterday: weather hot and track fast.
