LETTER FROM SARATOGA. A GAY WEEK—WHAT WAS GOIXG ON—NEW DIP- | LOMATS—QUEER FASHIONS—MISS HAZKLTINE OF ST. LOUIS—PERSONAL Gossip, ETC. Correspondence of Tae Evenixe Stan. Saratoea, August 19, 1881. The present week began most auspicionsly and has been throughout the liveliest of the sea- son. On Sunday evening the Presbyterian church on Broadway, which is quite a large one, was literally packed with people asseimbled to hear the famous De Witt Talmage preach. Hun- dreds failed to effect an entrange. Benefit bails have been numerous this week, Bernstein's orchestra at Congress Hall, and Franko’s at the Clarendon, have each had one, | and on Saturday evening Mr. Frothingham, the attentive master of ceremonies of the ball-room at the United States, is to have one, which will doubtless be as successful as the others named have been. The week's Bose began with a german | giwen by several young men inthe ball room at the Grand Union Hotel, on Monday afternoon. Twenty couples took part, Mr. Crouse, of Syra- cuse, leading, as he usually does at germans given here. The favors vied in beuuty with the ladies’ dresses. They were tastefully ar ranged on a table at the head of the room, which looked as if covered with Christmas toy There were globes with maps of the world thereon, fancy daggers, mimic valises, fans, bracelets, rosettes, flags of all nations, and lar: Japanese parasols. The young ladies all w thin dresses, beautifully made and trimmed. There were white, pink, blue, cream colored and heliotrope costumes, which naturally produced | @ Very pretty effect in the figures; the tints har- monizing so well with each other. All the dresses were short as most dresses worn here are. The gentlemen wore gloves, so that their hands might not rain the ladies’ dresses,as they are so likely todo when bare, from the moisturenaturally produced on the hands by dancing. It would be well if all gentlemen who dance round dances would be considerate enough to do this. THE SECOND GARDEN PARTY of this season occurred yesterday at the Grand Union Hotel, and the greatest crowd Ihave ever seen at any of these jicturesque fetes champefre, attended. In he afternoon from 4 to 7 the children, num- bering several hundred, had the large dancing floor laid under the trees to themselves, and they danced merrily. Children from six months to twelve years of age were present, the former of course in their nurses’ arms. Little toddlers un- der two years old attempted to dance, gaily revolving, or promenading. The dresses were in many instances much too elaborate, lace and ribbons being crowded upon silk and muslin. The weather cleared up for the occasion, and the garden with its many elm trees, flowerbeds, lawns and fountains, and its decorations of fags, and 3,000 Chinese lanterns looked as gay by da; as by night when the latter were lighted In addi- tiontohundredsofgaslampsand six electriclights, one of which hung just above the dancing floor. The effect of the lanterns, hung to represent chan- deliers with illuminated globes between the tall trees, and the other lights und the gorgeous dresses of the ladies, was, as Many said, worth a journey to Saratoga to see. The garden covers four acres,-laid out to the best advantage. Only ladies and gentlemen in fall dress were ad- mitted to the dancing floor in the evening. The ball was kept up until midnight. The dressing was the same as would be seen at the most splendid of city balls. It is estimated that fuily 8,000 persons were present, among them many seen at Washington parties. THE NEW DIPLOMATS. As the diplomatic corps at Washington has lost so many of its most popular gentiemen and ladies it is especially pleasant to know that among the new arrivals are some who will add much interest to the foreign legations. The new Spanish minister, Senior Barca and his wife and children, including a daughter, who will probably go into society next winter, are here, and also the Chilian minister, Seftor Martinez, and family. The latter minister also hasa daughter who is in society. The ladies of these two families are exceptionably agreeable and ik English well. Sefora rea will no doubt recall, by her manner and charming dressing, Madame Mantilla, the wife of the former Spanish minister. One evyenins, when I saw her, she wore a white satin. draped with white Spanish lace, and her ornaments were superb diamonds. QUEER FASHIONS. In my last I alluded to the lack of taste often exhibited by ladies in their dress here. Diamond earrings, brooches, innumerable rings and brace- lets of these precious stones are worn as often in the morning as by gaslight. Odd stockings (one of one color and one of another) have been worn here this season, and also odd earrings, a sclitaire sapphire in one ear and aruby of like size in the other. This is very convenfent, as broken sets of jewelry can then be used, and if you have a hole in one of your red stockingsall you need do if you are too lazy to mend it is to wear the good red one with an equally good yellow one and be in the h of fashion, according to some people's notion: Black stockings are often seen here w or light colored dreases, which seems to me a very ugly assortment of colors.
