CROSBY S. NOYES. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent, bena Sde daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, ond equal to that of all the _tther daily papers here added togeth “THe STAR Office is conncete = with the Tele- Phone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any Information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. Parsons leav! ing the city for the summer can have THe Star mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the address changed as often as desired. While the bulletins of the attending physicians to-day are not wholly discouraging, they are yet far from assuring, and there is no disguising the fact that the condition of the President remains extremely critical. His life at the present writ- ing may indeed be said to be trembling in a bal- ance, the slightest adverse movement of which would bring about that result which all the world must deplore. ‘The case is of course not hopeless, but it has nearly reached that point, and, however much the physicians may desire to keep up the con- fidence of the public, it is easy to see that there is very little left but apprehensions for the worst. = << ‘The political campaign in Virginia has opened in earnest, and the people of that state will have | Ro rest until after the election. Thereadjusters bave been making a dull canvass for two months, but as t had no opposition very lit- tle interest was manifested in their meetings. One of the principal speakers in behalf of the Freadjuster canse is the candidate of that party for attorney general, who is noted as the author of the phrase that “honor will not buy a break- | fast-” Cameron the readjuster candidate for governor, Mahone, Riddleberger and the lesser lights ofthe party are in the fleld, while on the democratic side, Daniel, McKinney, Tucker, Goode Payne, and a host of other prominent Men, are on the stump. The two parties base their estimates of the re- suits upon the vote of different years, and hence it is dificult for the impartial observer to prop- erly compare their conclusions. The readjusters insist that the election of 1879is the proper basis, because the state debt question was the Prominent issue then. That year the read- Jasters were victorious, polling 84,000 votes to 64,000 for the funders. This was but a small proportion of the total vote ofthe state. however, the people generally manifesting indifference in the election. The democrats insist on the other hand that the proper basis for computation is the vote of last year, when the readjusters poll- ed only 31,000 votes. The excitement already preduced, and the interest manifested, promise @ full yote this year, and upon the assumption of a full vote there can be no fair estimate based upon the election of 1879. The people are thoroughly aroused, and com- Paratively few of the whites, at least, will re- main away from the polls. If the readjuster and Fepublican vote could be united, it would doubt- less give them the election, but a thorough Bnion seemes to be out of the question. There are democratic readjusters who will not support the party ticket, becanse there is a republican upon it; and there are republicans who will not support it, because of the financial platform of the readjusters, for one reason, and because there is too much “old” democracy in it for mother. The chances are that the democrats ‘Will win the race by a “good length.” a Mystery ‘still 8 shrouds the death of Jennie Cramer, the foolish and unfortunate beauty of New Haven. Detectives seem the more puzzled the further they follow their clues. It is proba- ble that the mystery will never be solved. It is plain, however, that the girl was ruined before she lost her life, and it may be that an over- whelming sense of shame drove her to suicide. Atallevents her fate should teach a lesson to parents and children alike. Young, and especi- ally pretty girls, should not be allowed toomuch license in the use of their time or the choice of their company. This girl’s parents were ap- parently proud of her and encouraged her to make a display of her beauty, but when she made the first false step, instead of meeting her with gentle admonitions and forgiveness, she was denounced and abused, threatened and Virtually driven from home. The action of her parents more than anything else gives support tothe theory of suicide. _ +e A police census of the voters of Baltimore just taken shows the total number of legal voters in that city to be 78,067, of whom 66,827 are whites and 11,240 are colored. The increase over the census of 187) is 6,566. There is no pretense that this poll is absolutely correct, as it would be next to impossible for the police to take an exact census in connection with their other duties. Besides, very many residents of the city are now absent from their homes. The re- gistration lists of the city, as at present made up, show a total of 87,936 names of voters. At the last gubernatorial election 56,010 votes were polled, or 15,491 less than returned in the police census after allowing 6,566, the increase over the police census of two years ago. These figures do not sustain the allegation that the Fegistration lists of Baltimore contain more Dames than there are voters in ee widen ee a ‘The war of rates which a= Progressing between leading railroads for se- eral weeks has finally involved two of the leading railway presi- dents of the country in a controveray. President Vanderbilt, of the New York Central, in a recent interview, reflected upon the management of the Baltimore and Ohio company, and President Garrett very promptly takes up the cudgel, in the shape of a vigorous pen, in defense of his Toad. He characterizes Vanderbilt's statements as absurd, and declares that he will now make the war aggressive. Mr. Garrett is preparing a voluminous reply to the attack of Mr. Vander- bit, and no doubt the latter will make a re- joinder. ——___<+2—_____ The finding of five rifies among some cotton bales on a Liverpool dock is said to have revived the fenian scare in that city.
