It will be remembered that asad and fatal out | accident occurred at Madison a few years ago, by a team being frightened at a performing Frenchman and a bear, and that it cost the city a good deal of money to settle the costs. Oth wns resolved that they would not have any more bear performances in the streets. There was no town that was loaded for bears, after that accident, any heavier thagLa Crosse. The mayor, Joe Clark, was red hot, -~ he told iow a man the chief of po ice, Hatch, never to witha pete ing bear to come into. the town. lidn’t want anything better than a bear Hatch fight, and he said he should smile to see a Cana- dian Frenchman get up a bear dance in that town as Iong as he walked the streets. When the new mayor, Smiley, took the he had only one order to give the police, that was to keep an eye out for bears. There ‘was consternation In La Crosse on Tuesday, when a boy came up to the police office and said there was a man down town with a performing bear, and Hatch spiton his hands and told Pernue Clark to follow him. The bear was hitched to the hind axle of a mn, and the owner was in a saloon taking a dri Hatch said he would | go inthe saloon and capture the man, and told } Pernue to bring the bear right up to the station. | Pernue didn’t exactly like the way the thing was divided up, and he suggested that maybe he had better go in after the man and let Hatch take the bear, as he was an old bear hunter, but Hatch said the man was a rado. and he better surround him. So latch =went in and got the unresisting Frenchman, and started off, telling Pernuc to hurry up with the bear. Pernne is a man that, if he wanted a bear, had rather hire a man to go after it, but the eye of the chief was on him, and he walked up to the bear and took holdof the chain and said, “Come along, Mr. Bear.” The bear Teached up one claw and took hold of Pernue’s clothes about the small of the back and closed his claws and twisted a little, and there was about a pound of coat tail and pantaloons cloth and shirt that all came off together in awad, and | with a pale face Pernue started toward the lock- up to help Hatch hold the man. He overtook them as they arrived atthecalaboose, and Hatch asked him why he didn’t bring the bear, and he | said he came up to find out of the Frenchman | what the bear's name was. He said he never | could take a bear if he didn’t know its name. He | ut on a rubber coat to cover the place wherethe ear stepped on him and by this time Sam Campbell and Dave Littlejohn, the other police- men had arrived and they all went down after the bear. The boys made a good deal of fan of Pernue’sclothes, and Sam said the way to handlea bear was to look him right in the eye and para- lyze him. Pernue said he would let Sam para- lyze the bear, but before he got him Leen fees on more than one side the bear would rip all the clothes off him. Arriving at the wagon, Hatch said he would stand on the wagon tongue and hold it down, and they could surround the bear. The bear was lying in the sand asleep, and they got all around him and were just goingto pounce on him, when he rose upand the air seemed full of bears. The air seemed fairly fixed. With one paw he grabbed Campbell by the slack ofthe trousers, and withthe other he clawed Littlejohn on the shoulder, and he ripped their clothes scandalous, while Pernue got behind a dry goods box and Hatch held on to the wagon tongue. The bear stood up on his hind feet with both fore paws full of blue flannel clothing, and the police held a council of war on the wagon tongue. Finally they all got hold of the wagon and hauled it to the lockup, the bear fol- lowing, and then they gave the Frenchman his liberty and three dollars it he would take his bear and get out of town, and the last they saw of him he was going toward Winona locked arms with the bear, laughing, and the police went to a tailorshop to see if it would cost much more to mend their clothes than it would to get a new suit. Now they get together evenings and talk over the bear business, and Hatch asks them why they did not chloroform the bear, and use some judzment. ——— PARKER, THE TREACHEROUS GUIDE, SuoT.— Parker, who committed the assault on Mrs. Bull in the Adirondacks, was arrested on the bank of Long Lake, Hamilton county, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon. A CLERK ABSCONDS WITH $55,000 oF His Emproyers’ Moxr: New York dispatch says: Saturday morning the firm of J. C. Walcott & Co., brokers, 42 Broad street, informed the police that one of their clerks, who had been left to close up the business of the day previous, had absconded with $40,000 worth of stocks and securities and $15,000 in checks. The absconding clerk is A. D. Wheelock, 25 years of age and unmarried. He was left alin in the office in charge of the books and safe. He filled out three checks on the Continental Bank for 25,000 each, and got one cashed at the bank. On one of the others he got letters of credit on the banking-house of Brown Brothers, London, and_ the other on Drexel, Morgan & Co. The letters are nego- tiable in any part of the world where first-class banking houses exist. The firm has been in the habit of leaving three or four signed checks in the bank so that the office could at all times be ready to transmit business. The stubs were filled out by persons authorized to sign the checks, but the rest of the check was left blank, to be filled by the clerk in charge. Wheelock filled out these checks to suit his pleasure, and after taking 240,000 in securities, the numbers of which have been telegraphed throughout the country, left for parts unknown. It is supposed he sailed on an outgoing steamer which left on Saturday. The police have ascertained with certainty that Wheelock sailed for Bremen on Saturday in a North German Lloyd steamer. Under the treaty between Germany and the United States he cannot be extradited unless the crime can be construed into forgery. Venxor’s Latest VENTURE AT THE WEATHER. A telegram from Montreal last night is as fol- lows: Vennor says we may expect great change in the weather about the time the new comet is in its perihelion, when it will bealso nearest the earth. This will occur on the 20th of the present month. During the time from the 15th to the 20th of the present month, instead of being burned up, as we mi; t expect, we shall be nearly frozen by frost and strong cold ‘north- erly winds. ee KILLep His Moraer.—James Duffy, a thirteen- year old boy, picked up a gun on Saturday in the boarding-honse at Bridgeton, N. The 1881 will long be remembered asthe scoring ear, when the north was visited by more es and more storms and whirl- winds than in any previous year during the past fifty, when more houses were blown down and more lives destroyed by tornadoes than ever be- fore, and when the south was more generally burnt up in her corn crops. _ Cmrcaco’s INCREASED } MORTALITY FROM THE Heat.—The deaths in Chicago last week out- numbered those of any previous week.
