Theannualreunionofthe army chaplains, union and confederate, and the members of the Chris- tian and Sanitary Commissions was held at Cha- taqua, N.Y., yesterday, Rev. D. G. Gillette of TiL., presiding. Rev. John H. Vincent, D.D., gave some reminiscences of his service in the army of the Potomac, prefacing his address by stating that he was born in Alabama, and was brought up by a father who held slaves; yet he stood by the side of Abraham Lincoln and advo- cated the cause of the men and women who were kept in bondage, and when the war was over he held out his hand, with his heart in it, tothe brave men who had fought on the other side. Dr. Vincent was followed by Rey. S. B. Barnitz, of Wheeling, W. Va.; Rey. M. B. De- witt, D.D., of MacMinnville. Tenn.; Rey. F. M. Wood, of Xenia, Ohio; Rev. T. H. Knowles, D. D., of Newark, Rey. Dr. Alex. Martin, president of the Indiana Asbury. University, Green Castle, Ind,, and many others who had served in both armies. Dr. Dewitt, of the con- federate army, spoke of the high appreciation of President Garfleld which prevails in the south. ———_.e Putting Wire Underground, THE PLAN BY WHICH PHILADELPHIA PROPOSES TO GRAPPLE WITH THE PROBLEM. A special dispatch from Philadelphia says that this week the National Underground Electric Company will commence work laying telegraph wires under Market street from Delaware to 10th street, and 3d and 4th streets from Market to Chestnut street, to connect with the Western Union Telegraph Company's wires. An ordi- nance of the council gives the company the right to lay wires from Delaware to Schuylkill, but that will not be done for some time yet; or unt ashorter distance is proved to be a’ success. Conduits will be laid in trenches three feet deep, and the wires will be rolled into insulated cables. It was first intended to use terra cotta pipes to protect the wires, but a conduit ofartificial stone, lspatented by Mr. Calvin Detrich, of this city, was found to be much better for the purpose. The conduit is made of insulating material, and is about eight inches square, being punc- tured by twelve tubes for holding the cables, two pneumatic tube: graph wires and two electric light wires. The | insfllating substance is protected by a covering ial ston pavenren This covering is two and it. x, and is impervious to heat also. The latter has been tested to the tem- perature as low as two degrees below zero. and S not affected byfit. It is intended to 1: conduit in a continuous mass.without joints. In laying it the sheet iron tubes, about one inch tom and sides of artificial stone having been put down, the tubes remain in and the wires will be drawn through by pneumatic pressur SAS : To Assassinate Washington, A CONSPIRACY THAT WAS DETECTED A y YORK City IN 1 inate Gen. Robert Patterson died at his residence in Philadephia last evening, in his 89th year. He had been suffering for over two weeks from Bright's disease of the kidneys and fatty de- generation of the heart. Gen. Patterson was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, Jan- wary 12th, 1792. He came, while young, to the United States, received a collegiate education, and early manifested military predilections. He entered the army and was captain of the 32 infantry, April, 1814. Returning to commercial life, he became largely engazedein manufactures and owned several mills. — At the beginning of the Mexican war, in 1846, he was made a major- general of volunteers. He commanded his divi- sion at Cerro Gordo, led the cavalry and ad- yaneed brigades in pursuit, and the next morning captured Jalapa, receiving the thanks of Gen. Scott. He commanded the three-months’ Pennsylvania volunteers in 1861, was assigned to a military department, composed of the states of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and the District of Columbia, and crossed the Potomac June 15 at Williamsport. When Gen. MeDowell advanced into Virginia Patterson was instructed toremain at Winchester to hold in check the force of Gen. Joseph B. Johnston. His failure to do this, in consequence of which Johnston rein- forced Beauregard at Manassas, July 21, 1861, exposed him to severe military criticism, and he left the service July 27, 1861. He published, in 1865, “A Narrative of the Campaign in the Valley of the Shenandoah in 1861,” in vindication of his conduct. He was considered a brave and good soldier, notwithstanding whatever error he may have committed in that campaign. He was also regarded asa man of many and generous qualities, and he hada host of friends among military officers. Gen. Grant was always a great admirer of Gen. Patterson. = Bate eaves} > ee ee McDow ‘Sarp To HAvE “Gone West.”—A correspondent of the Charleston (S.C.)
