They pledge their party to secure a settlement of the public debt, with the consent of the State's creditors, which is consistent with the honor of the state, and dictated by justice and sound public policy. Theimportanttrathis that the maintenance of the public credit of Virginia is an essential means to the promotion of her prosperity. Of cou! settlement of the debt that is acceptableto the creditors will be fair and legitimate; but neither principal or interest can be cut down one cent without the full and free assent of the cre ation. Any plan o1 @ reduction of th itors, is repudiati that condemns the readj settling the debt is to arbitrarily reduce the amount to such figures as they conclude the state can pay, and then, by an act of the legisla- ture, fix the debt at that sum. This plan of pay- ing debts will not do in this country. The democrats oceupy high ground on the debt question. and they enter the canvass with that great point in their favor. - Seen Bridlaugh is undoubtedly something of a Ruisance: but the British House of Commons is Bot pursuing the proper policy if it desires to Suppress him. Notoriety is the breath of life to suck characters as Bradlaugh. Ignore him, let him ue, and he sinks out of sight. Had Bradlaugh been peaceably admitted to his seats and the oath administered to him without any fuss, he would probably have become an un- known factor in Bri aside from the character, principles or preten- Sions of the man, Parliament cannot afford to deny to a constituency its proper representation upon a mere quibble of conscience. The first refusal to admit Bradiaugh to his seat gave him & prestige that readily secured his re-election. Now he has been forcibly ejected from the House of Commons, and he tells the people that he is persecuted because he represents them in oppo- sition to aristocracy. He poses as amartyr—the very thing he desires—and he will, no doubt, be returned to Parliament again and again. —~+e > The President is improving slowly but surely, day by day, and the feeling everywhere now is that the danger is past. Doctor Hamilton, who ts very carefui in the expression of opinions, told a Srar reporter yesterday (the interview has been made to do service since as original matter in a number of papers) he “was most certainly of the opinion that the President will recover.” The other surgeons appear to feel equally as confident of by outcome. and the President himself is to look forward to the day when he ry his legs again.” Of course those who im to get well “in thirty minutes” will be disappointed, as his full recovery must be the slow work of weeks. +e» di a larze majority of ular vote that it will suffocate, perhaps, resurrected for service in another Campaizn. This is "r profit than any other class of permanent tments in the country have yielded. New Cotton fuctories are almost springing up in all the southern states, so rapidly are they being built and equipped.
