A. Co., August 1, 1881. Saturday afternoon the religious services here were slimly attended—the most of those on the ground being engaged in “fixing up” for Sun- day. The afternoon meeting was conducted by kev. J. W. Gray, of East Washington, who preached from Romans vili., 18th verse, and a short prayer meeting followed. Fhe evening meeting was conducted by Rey. Dr. Drinkhouse, editor of the Methodist hier geocsntrm l was in the nature of a rer and ex; meeting. soe aan Raemaegae ee ae SUNDAY SERVICES. Yesterday morning the early mee meeting at G:35.2’clock was conducted by Rev. T. H. Lewis, and after breakfast the tabernacle was filled rapidly. Here there 2s an interesting experience meeting, conducted by nev. Dr. Murray. The principal Sunday service wast 10:30 o'clock a.m., when there was a lange con- grecation present, and a fine choir assisted in the services, After brief remarks by Rev. Dr. Murray and Mr. Floyd, a collection was lifted. Rev. T. D. Valiant, the president of the conference, occupied the desk, and reading Hebrew II, as the lesson, took the 10th verse as his text. Re- marking on the fearful responsibility attaching to ministers who should be clear and truthful in preference to being eloquent, be preached on the subject of the atonement a most effective sermon. In the afternoon Rey. T. H. Lewls, of Balti- mere, preached on the doctrine of eternal pun- | ishment —his text being the last verse of Matt., Xx. chapter. His sermon was a masterly one, and it engaged the closest attention of the audi- ence for nearly an hour. After this sermon many people left the ground by vehicle or train, | and by night only about a fourth of the crowd | present during the day remained on the camp ground. Inthe evening the pulpit was occupied by Rey. R. 8. Norris, who preached from Deuteron- ‘The secret things belong unto the Lord our God; but these things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children fo1 ever, that we may do all the words of this law. It was a fine discourse and very appropriately followed those of the morning and afternoon— the first being in reference to Heaven, the sec- ond hell, and this as to the law. A DRY TIME. On Saturday evening there was considerable disappointment when it became known that | Brother Cox had failed to procure a sprinkler ; and although a rain would likely prevent some of the tenters' friends coming out there was a general hope expressed that nature would do the work allotted to the delinquent brother. Dur- ing the night some few com of rain on the tents gladdened the hearts of the inhabitants of the grove, but a sufficient quantity of water to lay thestust did not fall. LARGE ATTENDANCE YESTERDAY. During yesterday morning trains arrived from Baltimore and Washington and the Pope's Creek branch, bringing in all over a thousand persons, and trom the surrounding country every con- ceivable description of vehicle brought in its load, increasing the number on the ground to probably 3,500 in all. it is safe to say that had the weather looked more propitious in the morn- | ing, there would have been five tho sons on the ground. HEAVEN AND HELL VERSUS POLITICS. While in the circle there were excellent ser- mons preached, in which heaven and hell were discussed, on the outside the political situation was talked over, and as one passed along through the woods the words “Severn,” “Keating's, “Bannon,” “Bond,” “retrenchment,” ‘reform,’ “high taxes,” “squander,” “level headed,” met his ears. Sometimes these discussions were quite animated, yet there was little quarreling, and the entire encampment can be said to have been a model one for order. GOOD APPETITES OF CITY VISITORS. Notwithstanding the contracted quarters at the boarding tent, all applicants for dinner were fesse by means of the improvised tables out- side, and a big lot of chicken and “fixins” were devoured. Some of the city people proved themselves very partial to chicken. To the endow- |ment was attached the condition that one | student should be admitted annually who was te receive tuition free of change. This free scholar- ship was to be competed for ery year by the graduates of the Grammar schools of Washi | Among the contestants for the prize in 1873 was, & modest little fellow who had come to the | tal some years before, with his parents, from city of Chicago. His father being in feeble health, and in extremely modest circumstancer the subject of this sketch labored both early am late to assist his parents. At early dawn hy commenced his day's labor by delivering a route | ona morning paper, and again, after ai | school all day would carry his route on the Evexinc Star. How he could find time to | study seemed a mystery. But he must have | found opportunity somehow—and to study to | Some purpose, too—for when the examinations were concluded, his name headed the roil of | honor and to him was awarded the scholarship, He accordingly was admitted to the Prepara- tory Department of the College, and notwith- standing his leisure hours were still devoted to | the assistance of his now widowed mother, by delivering a paper route both morning and éve- ning, he performed the feat of completing the | two years’ course in one year. He now has been a student in the College proper two years, and that he has lost none of the diligence and indomitable spirit he exhibited. | imearlier years may be seen by an extract from | a letter which he wrote us a few days ago: “Tam supposed to be having vacation now, | but I believe [have fully as much to do as ak | any time during the year. I still carry the Post inthe morning. Then, at 9 o'clock, I give @ lesson in Latin, for which I receive 2 cents per lesson. At 12:30 I meet my college room-mate and we devote two hours to short-hand. From that time until 6:30 p.m. Ihave nothing defl- nite to do, but generally devote some eo | the preparation of latin and short-hand. Some days I take a little variation; for i I have just returned from an amateur — along Rock creek.” ‘his is sufficient, we think, to give our read- ers a glimpse at the little hero we are about.
