DRY Goons. THE EVENING STAR. __| F#!?4¥—2eunanr pay. AN D—HELP. FOR ees - i oe — ASSISTANT 23 cng yMFORTABLE, PLEASANT | DESIRABLE. THRE STORY Pe Tae ao sess RS 1881. pea, nade ebivay site W Sie, pel reompmonded, at stones. Shuang ree wi norte: sationes De | bilraseencctin avexce northwest. B. Hy A COMPLETE STOCK oF CROSBY 8. NOYES... --Editer. ‘The Evening Star has a requiar, bona fide daily circulation more that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal te that of all the _ other daily papers here added together. ft THE S7AR office is connected with the Tele- | phone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for | the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or an; information or business can be sent day ornight, | free of charge. Persons leaving the city for the summer ean | have THe Stan mailed to them, postpaid, for | fifty cents per month, and the address changed as often as desired. A Doctor Who Wasn't Called in. The doctor who has undertaken in the edito- tial columns of the New York Herald to write down the President's medical advisers and to Prophesy all manner of evil because some other doctors were not called in, isa little staggered by the favorable condition of the President, but | Tallies with the gioomy suggestion that though the signs are apparently satisfactory “a metas- tasis of suppurative action to the lungs may | possibly be apprebended.” This sounds quite | dreadful, but as the same Herald authority on July 9h denounced the “dull surgeons” for not seeing that “the ball is on the sciatic nerve” let | us hope that he is mistaken in his doleful prog- | nostication about the metastasis business. — Underground Telegraphy. Asystem of laying telegraph and telephone Wires underground has been devised, and is now being put into practice in New York city. An excavation is made to a depth of two feet along the street, in which a wooden trough is laid down. The wires are placed in this trough, and are then immersed in a composition whieh com- pletely insulates them. This composition is a mixture of powdered glass, parafine wax, resin and linseed oil. It is melted, and poured while hot into the trough containing the wires. When it coois this mixture becomes tough and hard; it is impervious to moisture, and is not affected by ehange of temperature. The wooden trough is not a part of the permanent work; it Is simply mould to contain and shape the composition, and may rot away without deing any harm. In- deed it is made of any common lumber, as its Purpose is only temporary; the composition being the material which is to protect the wires and | maintain their efficiency. The wires used are of @opper. with two coverings of cotton fabric Soaked in parafine wax. First, a half ineh layer of the Insulating composition is poured into the | bottom of the trough; then cight wires are pat down three-eighths of an inch apart; then an- other half inch layer of the composition, and an- other row of wires, and so on until the number of wires needed are lald. It ix claimed for this | system that it is much cheaper in first cost than any of those in use in foreign countries, and that besides. it does away with the necesity for re- pairs: that it will outlast the present unsightly system of poles; the maintenance in good work- ing order costs comparatively nothing, and that the wires can never be disturbed by storms. It isto be hoped that this or some other under- ground system will be promptly adopted In all the cities. —<o-— The Southern Improvement Boom. The immense undeveloped wealth of the south has at last attracted the attention of capitalists, and the enormous sum of $100,060,000 has been subscribed for investment in that part of the southern states lying east of the Mississippi rive? and south of Richmond. This caprtal is mainly owned in the northern states, but some of it comes from Europe. The chief investment is in railroads. One syndicate, called the Cincinnat; and Georgia, and organized with a capital of $16,000,000, is forming a railroad system, with Chattanooga as the center, which will extend through all the southern states east of the Mis- sissippi river. Ex-Senator Gordon is the head of another combination, the Georgia Pacific syn- dicate, capital $12,500,000, which is building a Failroad west from Atlanta to the Mississippi river. Then there are the Norfolk and Western syndicate of Virginia, capital $11,500,000; the Erlanger syndicate, building railroads in Ala- Danville syndicate, the Louisville and Nash- Ville system, and the Baltimore and Ohio system. all of which are extending their railway connections and constructing new lines in the south. Contracts have been made involving the expenditure of $17,300,000 in the next twelve months upon railway lines already commenced from the city of Atlanta to different points. ‘This extension of the railway system of the south has already attracted to that section thousands of capitalists looking for investments in mineral | ~ and agricultural lands and in manufactories. | Within a year $1.000,000 has been invested by | northern men in two cotton factories in Augusta, | Ga. Northern parties recently purchased an | ron furnace at Suwanee, an investment of $5,000,000. The coal and iron lands in Alabama and Georgia are being bought by northern men; and, indeed, everything in the south is “boom- ing.” Such prosperity was never dreamed of in | & that section in the days of slavery. The biizht- | ing effects of the rebellion have passed aw Law and order prevail, and the surplus capital of the north is seeking investment in every part of the south. ——_~+<->_____ Daring the year 1880 1.180 persons were killed and 6.602 were injured on the railways of Great Britain. Of the kilied 546 were employés and of the injured 2,080 were employés, or about @ne-third of the entire number of sufferers by suilroad accidents were persons employed by the | Feads. A larze proportion of the injuries oc- curred in coupling and uncoupling ears. The management of railroads in this country is not, all probability, any more regardful of human Wife than that of Great Britain; and perhaps the statistics of injuries there afford a pretty fair basis for an estimate of those inthe United States. It can be claimed, however, for the Failroads of this country that they make better Provision for their employés who are injured and the families of those who are killed in the railway service than the companies of the other hemisphere. Most of the railroad companies of the United States make it a rule to support in- jared employes while disabled, and some of the Fichest have established regular relfef funds. Every protection, however, that the law can throw around employés of railroads and passen- Gers should be extended and rigidly enforced. ——s According toa . correspondent of a New York Paper writing from Ireland there were during the months of April, May aad June 5,262 per- sons evicted, representing 1,065 families. Nearly @ne-half of this number of families were re- admitted as “eare-takers”—to occupy the lands temporarily until tenants could be found. The tenants unconditionally evicted occupied lands oMcially valued at £5,708, but on which the year’s rent claimed from them amounted to permanent, | will offer GREAT BARGAINS TO-MORROW. on | than ene ‘noni tate hote, | and at these marked-down prices are decided bargains. | SHAPE, IT IS NEVERTHELESS ABOUT TWICE | WEEK FOR THE SALE OF ALL REMNANTS, and | center counters will coutsin nothing but ressuanta, all iW | measured, and prices marked in plain figures.
