Steady Progress Toward Recovery. A Comfortable Night Followed by a Good Day. The President passed a yery good night. He slept more continuously than heretofore: in fact, from one to five o'clock he slept without a break. There was no fever during the night. This morning the President expressed a desire for more solid food than has been given him the past two day The physicians'did not grant all the President's request, but allowed him a piece of chicken, which he apparently enjoyed very much. In addition to the chicken he ate a piece of toast, with the juice of a steak squeezed over it, and some milk with a little old rum. He was more cheerful than usual this morning, and was al- lowed to talk without much restraint to Mrs. Garfield and the others who were in the room The following official bulletin was issued this morning: Official Bulletin, 8:30 A. CRITICISING THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S COURSE, Among the members of the District bar there is some unfavorable comment on the action of Distriet Attorney Corkhillin regard to the case of Guiteau, the assassin. It is asserted that the course of the District Attorney is entirely with- out precedent as regardsthe imprisonment; that under the law the warden of the jail is no more responsible to the District Attorney than he is to any other good citizen, big immediate supe- rior being the Chief Justice. The theory of the law is that a man is innocent until found guilty, and it is maintained by the cayillers that the warden is not authorized to do aught else than to keep Guiteau just as he keeps any other pris- oner. THE PUNISHMENT GUITEAU IS LIABLE TO if the President recovers is detined in sec. 1150, revised statutes, relating to the District, which says:—‘‘ Every person convicted of manslaughter | or of any assault with intent to kill shall be sen- tenced to safe imprisonment and labor for the | first offence not less than: two nor more than eight years. and for the second offence for a period of not less than six nor more than fifteen years. The prisoner has been since his arrest isolated from the other prisoners and officers as much as possible, ing in a corridor from which all othe prisoners had been removed, and in full view o' the officers in the rotunda of the building. The | orders prior to Col. Corkhill’srequest to keep the prisoner secluded, was just as strict as after- wards, for no officers whose duty does not call them in the wing of the building in which he is confined are allowed im that wing at all, and holding any conversation with him save as to keeping his cell tidy, &¢. It is not known that he has any money, and it is surmised that he only wishes to add to his many financial victims. He continues to spend much of his time in read- | ing the Bible, and seems to be engaged in writ- ne what is SUPPOSED TO BE HIS AUTOBIOGRAPIY, and at times he takes notes from his Bible and carefully puts the papers within the leaves.
