THE EVENIN “WASHI WEDNESDA CROSBY 5. NOYES. . ‘The Evening Star has a regvlar, permanent, bona fide daily more than treble t of any other di per published in ashington, and equi that ef all the | other daily papers here added together. NG STAR. _ .-Editor, | ‘THE Stan office is connected with the Tele- | phone Exchange. Advertisements, orders, for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day ornight, free of charge. Persons leaving the city for the summer ean have Tax STAR mailed to them, postpaid, for | fifty cents per month, and the address changed as often as Hilotie “Fun” A letter received from Annapolis, by due course | of mail, purporting to give the particulars of the finding of the stray Guiteau bullet Nicholas Jackson, was published by Tue yesterday for what it might be worth as afford- ing a possible clue to the discovery of the miss- Ing ball. It is now stated that the letter was the invention of some Annapolis “wag” as a | burlesque upon a negro ank™ by the name of Nicholas Jackson. <3 of Annapolis must have peculiar ideas of fun to consider the at- tempted ass: ion of the President a good subject for ajoke. The Baltimore Gazette very properly characterizes the act as ill-timed, idiotie and deserving punishment. +o German in the Publie Schools. In St. Low iren of German parents, ren of parents of other nationali- ing the German language in the public schools. The tax-payers of that city have been vainly endeavoring to rid themselves of this burden, as they consider it, and confine the public schools to the English language. This question has been an issue in every election for members of the schooi board for years past, and though the sentiment in favor of the abolition of German has increased, it has not yet been strong enough to win. At one time the opponents of the German attachment to the schools presented petitions to the board from Irish, French, Spanish, and Italian citizens, praying that these languages be taught for the bene- fit of their children, respectively. if German was to be continued. The experiment of teaching German in the public schools of Washington was tried some years azo, but was discontinued on account of its expense, and for the reason that it was not considered an essential feature of the public school system oe The Alleged Six Weeks Fast. Griscom, the Chicago faster, completed his | felf-imposed task of doing without food for six weeks yesterday. His performance has at-| tracted but little attention, and in a financial | Point of view has been a complete failure. Asa Tule people did not evinee enough interest in the Matter to care whether the fast was actually kept or not. Hence the arrangements for wateh- | ing Griscom during the time of his abstinence have been left principally to volunteers, and | there is no assurance that he has not take Rourishment daily. He has lost 454¢ pounds of flesh, according to the telegraphic reports, but | this does not by any means prove that he has not | taken food during the past six weeks. A table | Was spread with the most tempting viands and toothsome delicacies before the faster, ready for him to take his first meal for forty-five days. With all these articles to tempt his appetite, the so-called faster manifested utter indifference. He displayed less desire for food than a healthy | man ordinarily would who had only missed his | Tunch. Hewandied the dishes, commented upon them, and finally, when the time which released him from any further obligation of denial ar- | + Fived, he proceeded very leisurely to eat and drink, taking strawberries as his second dish. 4 man without food twelve hours would select something more substantial than strawberries to fill the vacuum. es Ohio Polities, Again. The Ohio democratic state convention met in Columbus to-day for the nomination of the can- idates for governor, lientenant governor, su- Preme jude, attorney general, treasurer and for a member of the board of public works. Notwithstanding the warm weather and lack of hotel accommodations at Columbus, the con- ¥ention is largely attended, nearly all the prom- inent democratic politicians of the state beingon hand. The convention willbe ‘composed of 687 del- egates—one for every 500 votes cast for Hancock. There is sharp competition for the nominations for governor, supreme Judge and board of public works. Anthony Howells, who was on the ticket with Governor Bishop four years ago, will prob- ably be nominated for state treasurer without much opposition. For attorney general several are named. The most prominent gubernatorial candidates are Ex-Congressman H. B. perk: of Cincinnati; Isaac Miller, of Cincinnati; John F. Follett, of Cincinnati; John W. Dekealten of Springii Jongressman M. P. Geddes, of Mansfield: George W. Jewell, of Zanesville; B. W. Carlisle, of Lancaster, and W. W. Armstrong, editor of the Cleveland Plaindealer. The demo- cratic victories in Ohio have been won for the past two decades or more in “off years,” and this, no no doubt inspires the party with renewed hope ofsnecess this time: hence the great interest manifested in the convention and the numerous candidates. The canvass for the gubernatorial Bomination has produced some asperities that | May crop out in the convention. The tariff | question also promises to come in for a large share of attention, much to the disgust of many Ohio democrats. Ex-Conzressman Hurd is the special champion of free trade, and he has boldly | Aeclared his purpose of titting a free-trade plank | in the platform. He is severely criticised by his party for foreing into the canvass this “disturbing element.” The older and perhaps wiser heads proposed to ignore the tariff entirely because there are not a few protectionists in the @emocratic ranks of the state. Mr. Hurd has rendered the silent policy on this subject im- practicable. He has made the tariff question so prominent in connection with the convention that if his free-trade resolutions are voted down that Yote of itself will be regarded as a party decla- ration. There is still some talk of nominating ex-Senator Thurman fgr governor in the event that a wrangle ensues over this nomination. The democrats recognize that in Governor Foster they have a strong man to antag- enize, and their ticket will probably be made up with a great deal of- care. ‘The indications are that the platform will be confined to state issues entirely. The shooting of the President will, in all probability, have the effect of spurring the republicans to greater ex- ertions than they have hitherto made in off years. They will feel disposed to give their declarations of loyalty to the administration and devotion to the President substantial emphasis by winning a decisive victory. Tne legislature to be chosen will reorganize the congressional distriets, and therefore a determined fight will be made by both parties to control it. +s “Cranky” people and persons with crotchets and hobbies had better give WasBington a wide berth just now.
