The attending surgeons sent the following telegrams to the consulting surgeons this after- noon: “CEXeeCTIVE Manson, 1 p.m.—To Dra. Frank H. Hamilton and J. H. Agnew: The Presi- dent continues to improve slowly. The acid eructations have not recurred during the Inst twenty-four hours. An ounce of milk witha teaspoonful of rum has been taken every two | hours during the day, and at longer intervals during the night without producing any gastric embarrassmenis. At 9a. m. he teok tea grains of bi sulphate of quinia, which did not disturb the stomach. Yesterday, towards eveaing, he became restless, wearied and anxious for the | morphia. A quarter of a grain was given hypo- dermically at 8:30 p. m., after which he passed a | tranquil night, sleeping most of the time. Yes- terday afternoon he had a smail solid passage from the bowels, in which a notable deficiency of biliary coloring matter was obseryed. The yellowish tinge of the skin continues about as the last report. At 8 p. m. his pulse was 108; temperature, 101.3; respiration, 24. This morn- ing, at 8:30 a. m., pulse, 100; temperature, 99.4; respiration, 24. At 1p. m., pulse, 104; tempera- ture, 101.2; respiration, 22. (Signed) D. W. Buss, J. K. Barnes, J. J. Woopwarp, Rosert Esaysven. Col. Rockwell's Description of the Shooting. Col. Rockwell gives the fellowing interesting Particulars of the affair: ‘The President had ar- Tanged the night before for Secretary Blaine to call at the mansion to go down te the depot with him. The came round in his own car- riage. Mine was in reserve, and followed just be- hind the Secretary’s. I had several pi of baggage to dispose of, and so drove directly to the baggage room and was getting the checks when I heard, ‘crack, crack!” with an interval be- tween the shots about as long as it would take to cock a pistol. On the sill of the door leading from the ladies’ parlor into the general reception room, or main hall, stood Secretary Blaine call- ing for me and pointing to the would-be as- sassin, Guiteau. It was a terrible thought, but Nevertheless One bis flashed across my mi that the President had been shot. Quickly had the President's carriage bronght to the main door, the cushions arranged to make the President as comfortable as possible and was prepared to take him directly to the mansion. The physicians advised agaleet it, and for the j best. After I had written, from his dictation, | the touching telegram to his wife and the hasty | examination had been made ‘upstairs, he was re moved to the ambulance. The President put his right hand in mine and the driver was cau- tioned to proceed slowly over the cobble-stone pavement until we reached the concrete at Sev- | enth street. We had travelled-but two squares from the depot when he asked. ‘How far are we now?’ and in a subdued voice said, ‘It hurts! oh, | it hurts!” At Thirteenth street he again asked, ‘Where are we now?’ I told him, and he urged us to go a little faster.” Official Report as to the Pistol and Ball. This morning Cols. Poe and Whittemore sub- s | mitted their report on the pistol and ball to Col. Corkhill, as follows: The pistol is marked “British Bull-dog,” but | does not bear the maker’s name. It is donble- | acting, with a revolving cylinder containing fi chambers each, of one and one-quarter inches in length, and caliber forty-five one hundredths of The barrel is 247 inches in length. With the pistol were four’ cartridges, which | were handed to us from your office safe by your- self, and six others apparently like them in fresh. In our experimental firing, we first used three of those handed us by yourself, reserving one for weighing, and next three of the others. Of the six received from Detective MeEltresh two failed to explode and one was reserved for weighing. The first three referred to above ave | designated by the numbers 1, 4,3, and the sec- | ond three by the numbers 4, 5, The target was made of six pine boards, each | one inch in thickness, and placed one behind the | other at intervals of an ineh. It is stated that since Guitean’s confinement | in jail he has not been allowed to see a paper or | be told one word as to what effect his crime has | nd. upon the country. He begged the guard in = | charge of him to-day to tell him whether the | President was dead or not. The information was denied him, whereupon he swore that he would | not open his mouth again to any official in reia- | tion to the matter unless he was furnished with | a newspaper. GUITEAU AT THE CAPITOL. According to the Baltimore Sun, Mr. J. Mon- roe Heiskeil, an officer of the Senate, says that Guiteau was almost a daily or there during the late executive session, and would frequently send cards to Senators, but did not sueceed in having interviews with many ofthem. | He would often remain the whole morning in | the ladies’ reception room; sometimes would soon weary of his want of success in intervie ing Senators, and retire to the public gallery where he usually sat until adjournment. “Unlike | so many of the hangers-on around the Senate chamber, he was never known to ask permission | to enter the private gailery. He was always | quiet and weil-l ‘behaved, and never gave troub! further than the incessant sending of cards, which seemed, whether responded to or not. to satisfy his ambition. Mr. Heiskeil! also saw Gui- teau about a month since at the office of the See- retary of State, where he remained for a loag time awaiting the arrival of that official, who had ju: returned from New York. The secre- rary declined to see any one, and Guiteau finally put his business in writing, which was a demand for a foreign mission or a consulate.
