The Killing of ‘irs. Bailey. TRIAL OF JOHN DONAHUE FOR MURDER. In the trial of John Donabue, tndicted for the murder of Mrs. Catharine Batley on the 13th of February last, after our report closed yester- day, Dr. J_F. Es artigan, Augustus Rupp aac Elizabeth Maroney and Se it Dunn! Were examined for the government, the lat ‘er three testifying to the (llsturbance at Mra. Bal- ley’s house,on the ith-street road. Lieut, Jobson testified for the @efence that the cor- ber ofa brick found at Mrs. Bailey's house Mited the fracture in her skull exactly, and that Mrs. Murphy said that she hoped the eor- oner’s jury would not say that the blow was struck with a brick. Mrs. Mary Doyle testified that Mrs. Murphy told her on the morning that her mother died that she was killed with achair rung. O. 8. B, Wall testified to Dona- bue’s reputation for peace and good order. TO-DaY'S PROCEEDINGS, This morning Dr. Hartt for the govern- ment, preduced a section of the skull of the de- ceased, and showed the fracture, which he sald Was Inade with a blunt instrument. He did not think that it was made by the piece of cnair Cs hibited nor by the brick, if It had been thro ‘with great force. Other medical testimony on this point was given, and it Slattery testified that Donohue told that Mra. Balley broke @ chalr over his head and he Doo up a plece and struck her over the head. ‘ames Goodman. a car driver, testified that he saw Dobobue break the window open and throw something tp. and Eliza came out and he ran around the side of the house and grabbed up something. DONOHUE'S STORY. He then made bis way to the front door. and he was arrested by Offleer Dunnigan. Bis head was cut in the melee, and he was taken to the Police Court and released. Lieut. THE LEWIS SCANDAL. ‘The report of the committee on teachers was called up, and Mr. Wilkinson moved an amend- ment of the list to insert the name of Miss Car- ne E. Lewis in place of Miss Julia A. C. Wood, 2 the seventh division, and he read a petition signed by John A. Gray and thirty or forty others requesting that Miss Lewis be retained Mr. Lovejoy explained that no such proposi- tion came to the committee from the seventh Paklonries subboard. Mr. Brooks sald that he had that they had got through with the case Miss Lewis, but we find that delegations are petitions. The committee ped.
