THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. ASHINGTON W. SATURDAY........ + JUNE 25, 1881. ———————————————— CROSRY &. NOVES.____Editer. lished in Washingten, and equal te that of all the other daily papers here added together. ————E—————SSs _———— THE Braz office is connected with the Telephoae Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or Duriness can be sent day or night, free of charge. ————————SSSqqqqqSSSS5 Persons leaving the city for the summer can have ‘Tax Bran mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the sddreas changed as often a desired. Se It becomes more evident every day that the republicans of Virginia will not coalesce with the readjusters. The Valiey Virginian, leading Tepublican paper of the state, says “there 13 but one party that can or will represent the re- Publican side, and that is the regular repubil- can party, standing ona repubitean platform, and fightteg for republican integrity.” That paper takes northern republican journals and feaders severely to task for the support ana countenance they are giving the readjusters, and warns them that they are “drivinga wedge into the republican party of the nation that Will split it to pieces.” The readjusters have made coalition possible only by the complete surrender of the republican party to the former. The main purpose of the readjusters in holding their convention so early was to de- moralize the republican party; to work its dis- organization by coaxing republican voters to the support of the readjuster ticket. Senator Mahone boldly declared that he did not -want the republican leaders; be only wanted the rank and file—the yoters, The Virginian warns northern journals and politicians that in sup- Porting the readjusters in this canvass they are laying the foundation of future trouble in the northern states, when republicans who now erdorse the Mahone party will b3 held respon- sible for Its declarations in favor of the repudi- ation of state obligations Ex-Governor Nelson Ding'ey, proprietor of the Lewiston Journai, hag beea nominated by the republicans of the 24 Congressional district 6f Maine, to succeea Hon. Wm. P. Frye. The democrats and greenbackers will unite on a candidate against the republican nominee, and the prohibitionists also have a candidate in the feld, but Governor Dingley’s popularity is very Seat in the district. and tt Is believed he will be elected despite this formidable opposition. Particular stress 1s laid upon this election from the fact that the House of Representatives ig so Bearly equally divided between the republicans and the opposition that a single vote onone side or the other may decide the organization of the House next December. ——_-~-«-.____ The report of the investigation ordered by Secretary Blaine to be made of the figures and Statements ot Professor Youle Hind in regard to the fishery award will, tt 1s expected, be submitted next week. The Secretary intends, it 1s said, to Inquire Into all the representatioas Of Prof. Hind, with the view of either confirm iog or refuting his statements alleging fraud In connection with the $5,560,000 award; and it any fraud or misrepresentation of facts or figures shall be demonstrated to claim a return Of any excess of payment that may have re- sulted therefrom. —_~-+o-_____ The Dedt Payer, the new republican organ of the Virginia Straightouts, has made its appear- ance in Richmond. It matntains that an hon- est payment of the state debt is the paramount issue of th pending canvass, and that the republican party is the only one in the state which stands fatiy and unequivocally in favor of such payment. The Deb! Paver wiil be issued weekly for the present, but it is under- Stcod that the founders are ready to mikedga dally whenever the patronage justiaes such a change. Both the prominent repubiteaa jour- nals of Virginfa—the Firginian and the Debt Payer—are fighting against coulition and fora ‘straight party ticket. Either Bradiey or Sessions must be ‘‘meat” for the Albany grand jury, if that body does its duty, no matter what the coaciusions of the legislative investigation committee may be. It Bradley is not a perjarer, Sessions ts a briber; if, on the other hand Sessions did not try to bribe Bradley then Hradiey is perjared. Itisour impression that it would be asafe and proper proceeding to indict them both. ee Tbe enumeration of population in Great Britain under the census now being taken has progressed far enough to show that the total Population of the kingdom 1s over 35,000,000. ‘The increase during the past decade has been Uttle over 4,000 ——_ore-____.
