This action Of the committee determines the policy of the republican party in Virginta. The central com- mittee, Composed of representative men from each Congressional district, has spoken for the party, and {ts voice is against coalition. The committee in providing for a convention took the wise precaution to define the political qual- Wieations of those who shall be represented in the convention. One of the provisions of the call is “that Lo one shall be permitted to be @lected or to participate in the election Of delegates to sald convention who does not scknowledge primary aliegiance to the repubiican party, nor who is a member of any other political organization.” ‘There can hardly be apy doubt as to the action of theconvention. It will nominate a repabil- can Ucket upon a platform declaring in unmis- takable language for the full paymentot the State debt. The Indications are, however, that ‘the coalitionists have not yet given up the fight. Mr. Lewis, late chairman of the central coa- mittee, after having, in disregard of the date (June 29th) recommended by the executive com- mittee, tesued a call for a meeting of thecentral committee on the 2ist, suddenly changed the date of his call to the 25th inst. There was aj; quorum present at the meeting yesterday, now- ever, and tie votes by whic Mr. Lew!s waz deposed and state convention ordered com. prised @ majority of the whole {i5 out of ‘Therefore, even should all the absentees fa’ | T | PACK UP And get ready to GO TO BOSTON, THE WHITE MOUNTAINS, NAHANT, EWAMPSOOTT, OLD ORCHARD BEACH, MT. It ta virtually settled that the Coming contest in that state will be @ triapguler one. The readju-ters are alvady in the feld with a mixed Ueket of former democrats and repubiicaus. ‘The democrats will nominate their ticket eariy | in August, and the republicans will follow | later in the month, The Virginta election will attract a larger share of public attention this year than that of any other state, because of the prominence given to the debt question. ‘The refusal of the republicans to make an alil- ance With the readjusters probably: dooms the latter to defeat. In the presidential elecitoa last year they cast only 31,000 votes, agatast about $6,000 by the republicans and 94,00) by the democrats. The readjusters have planted themselves upon the Riddleberger bill, which Preposes to scale down the state debt. The Richmond organ of that party in a leading ed! torlal yesterday declare1 that the Riddle- berger bill offers al: that the people of the state Can pay or will pay. The republicans have only kept thetr party faith in refusing to have anything to do with the readjusters and their Tepudiation doctrine. Mr. Jefferson Davis 13 paying the penalty of writing a book. upon his work come from ex-confederates. ‘The southern side of the war Is betng fouzat over again, on paper, in consequence of Mr. Davis’ strictures upon some of the leading | generals on that side. The passions enzen- dered by the rebellion have so far died out that the people of tue country now fal Interested in gettlog ai tue truth of history, and it 13 only in thts light that the Davis book and the con- troversies over {t attract attention. Confed rate official records were very Incomplete, aud it ls only trom the papers held by and the recol- lections of the chief actors on that side that the missing liak3 cin be supplied. The honor ef baving been‘‘Lee’s favorite general” has been awarded to perhaps no leas than a score of men who fought under the rebsl com- mander. It has been easy to claim distinction a3 & confederate and to assert the claim for the ' reason that there were no records of regiments and commaucs t) either establishor refute it, a8 Is the case with the Union army. Ata conference of the stalwarts of the New York Jegisiature, in Albany last night, Mr Conkling spoke for over an hour. He opposed any combination for the election of Senators which should inctude a half-breed, and insisted upon the election of “pure” stalwarts. In the event that two stalwarts cannot be elected, h» advised adjournment of the legislature. The Conkilrg stalwarts combined with the demo crats Can cast votes enough to force an adjourn ment at apy time, but it 1s doubtful if they follow Mr. Conkling’s advice to that extent. In counseling adjournment Mr. Conkling must have conterspiated an alliance with the den. | erats. His supporters are too few to accomplish | ap3tbing alone, and they could not eapect atid | from the admintstrationiats in carrying out a Program Isid down by Conkling. The repybiican central committee, which formeriy existed alone to do his bidding, was only prevented from declaring against him by stalwarts absenting themselves and tins breaking a quorum. 1t had been determined to offer a resolution censuring Conkling aad Platt, and protesting against their re-election. The Cenkling members, after a canvass, con. cluded that such a resolution, it offered, would | be adopted, and to prevent it they absented | themselves, leaving the committee without | mewbers €notigh to transact business.
