THEEVENING STAR(S" ss aonorucn, | sTunrweme vam WANTS, —____| FARIS —MIBORLLANEOUR THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON FRIDAY. s++--SUNE 17, 188k. ——————————————S CROSBY &. NOYES.___..Editer. The Evening Star has a regular, perma- bo ide dally circulation more than ofany ether daily paper pub- ed in Washington, and equal to that ef all the other dally papers here added THe Bran office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or ‘business can be sent day or night, free of charge. a a SS Pereous leaving the city for the summer can have ‘THE Stk mailed tothem. postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the sddress changed sa often as SS ‘To Advertisers—The Double Sheet, Tue Star printed during the month of May 2,392 new advertisements, being the largest bumber ever printed {in one month In the his- tory @ the paper. The Increase for the fve months of Sl over the corresponding period of last year already exceeds 600, that of May alone being 284. Advertisers will confer a favor by sending in their orders early for to- morrow’s enlarged edition tn order to secure insertion and classification. Our Shade Trees. Under the fpfluenice of the late rains the, al- Teady, prosperous shade trees of the city nave nourished wonderfully, and the result is that the city appears one mass of verdure. Looking down many of the streets the compact lines of trees completely screen the houses trom view, ard but for the tell-tale presence of the as- phalt pavement one might imagine himself in Some forest aisle of thrifty trees. The side- walks that are lined with double rows of trees present the appearance of contin- uous arbors, miles in length; and the branches are allowed to droop so low that @ moderately tall man fs compelled to stoop in passing under them, especially when the dense foltage Is weighed down by moisture tp rainy weather. This abounding array of verdure Is exceedingly pleasant to the eye, but it isa question whether the city 1s not getting more shade and more barriers against the clr- culation of air than 1s altogether wholesome. Our parking commissioners have succeeded admirably in filling the elty with thrifty trees of mayy cholic varieties, but it seems to be their plan to cultivate them in tow cabbage- shaped form, with compact masses of follage hear the ground, supplying a dense shade. The result is that the circulation of air is greatly impeded by this matted jangle of vegetation, and at the same Ume as unhealthy Gampness {s promoted about the basements and lower stories of houses, especially those fronting north. The green mould to be seen onthesteps and basement fronts of houses thus shaded, and the growing dampneas of basement rooms heretofore dry, afford evidence ‘that there 1s such a thing as getting too much shade about a house. The unwelcome visita- Uon of the musquito plague and some forms of malarial disease in parts of the city heretofore fee from them, may oe be accouated for 1m the same way. Sunlight and fresh air are, after all, the great Andispensabies for health, and they cannot de shut owt with tmpunity,—certainly not in the latitude of Washington, where the atmosphere 1g naturally humid. It will probably b3 found Tequisite to alter the plan of trea calture somc- what,—to trim off the lower limbs, thin out the follage, and encourage the growth of the trees Into stately shafts, throwiag out branches and spray at sufficient cievation to afford free Circulation of air and allow a ticker of whole- some Sunlight to penetrate the follage. It will te well, also, especially in ths case of houses facing north, to either dispense witn trees within the parking, or to have the lower branches lopped and the foliage thinned oat to & point above the main floors and chambers of the house. --—_____ Gen. Grant Forgets. The New York Post has the following edi- torial, presumably by Carl Schurz, who -was in & position to be well informed upon the matter: “General Grants memory seems to be strangely at fault. In a recent interview at Soy y he sald: ‘When I was acting as Presi- Gent, if a single Senator from any state objected to an appoiniment it was not made, although some Cabinet officer might have favored it.” It is & well-known fact that the opposition of both Sebators from Massachusetts and the Vice Pres- isent did not prevent him from appointiog Sim- mons collectoy of customs at Boston. Of the whele Congressional delegation only Gen. But- ler favored the appointment. But there was another case of still greater significance. In the first year of Gen. Grant's first administra- ton it was rumored that he intended to remove oxe of the supervisors of tnteraai revenue and to puta mau of bad reputation tn his place. Both Sehators from the respective state protested against the change; a large majority of the Congressional delegation did the same. the Chamber of Commerce and a large number of merchants of the — city in that state did the same; the Secretary of the Treasury, on ac- count of the bad character of the man, was re- luctant tomake the appotntment, bat against ail these protests Pres lent Grant ordered the appointment to be made. [t was that ‘of Jono McDona'd, who soon afterward became the chief Of the notorious whisky-rings 1n the west.” Agricultural statistics of the census bureau show an unprecedented advance in productions of ail kinds. During the last decade the average increase in the production of corn, wheat, oats, £nd other staple products was one hundred per Cent, while the increase between 16) and 1s70 was only twelve per cent, and that between 1S50 and 1560 was Dut forty-three per cent. Be- tween 1s6v and 1570 the four years of clvil war baturally reduced the productions of the coun- try, but making all due allowance for that, the increase between 1370 and 1Ss) 1s gratifying, Agriculture ts the basis of a country’s wealth and prosperity, and each additional person who turns bis attention to the cultivation of the Soll contributes to the further development of the country and tothe growth of its material Wealth. The agriculturists are betng steadily increased in number by Immigrants, moat of whom come to tuts country for the purpose of tiling the soil. Every succeeding year marxs @n increase of acreage put under cultivation, and It requires no prophet to foretell that the census Of 1590 will show a much greater ad- vance In the productions of this country than ts Contained tn the statistics just published py the census bureau. —_—_—_—_—_—____ 500 REWARD: OVER A MILLION OF LTTE’S Y PADS FRENCH Haye already been sold in this country and in France. every one of which has ziven perfect eatisfaction, and has performed every the when sed according We now say to the affficted and doubtin, ones ‘that test ye wil Pay the above reward for a 'siusie LAME BACK to cure.
