WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY.......... JUNE 15, 1881, CROSBY 5. NOYES._._.. Editors ‘The Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment.bonn fide dally circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper pub- lished in Washinate: nd equal te that the other daily papers here added together. “4 THE Bran office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper ‘by mail and otherwise, news, or any informstion or business can be sent day or night, free of charse. Pereons leaving the city for the summer can have ‘Tue Stak mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the sddress changed ss often as desired. ‘The Speculative Boom. ‘The spirit of speculation is ramoaat in this country. All classes and conditions of people fe, more or less, tnfected by it, and the mania 1s on the increase. In nine cases out of ten where two or three men mest togeth>r, these days, the subject of stocks, their probable rise or fall, etc., ig talked of. There are numbers of men who regularly pursue the busines3 of en- couraging persons to speculate. These men know all the “points” of the market, and their usual proposition is to advise the uninitiated how to Invest, under an agreement that the profits of the venture shall be divided equally. If there is loss, the party who furnishes the money bears it all, of course. In a single hour at mid-day an observer can see almost every class represented among those who call to apxiously watch the board. A lucky investment by one person gives to allof his or her friends the speculative fever, and it spreads rapidly. One of the arguments used by those who en- courage speculation 1s that there Is little or no danger of loss: that Ifa stock decitae3 a point Or two one day it will recover tn a short time if the investor will hold on; that there {3 so much money In the ccuntry that wiil go Into stock in- vestments, and this will keep the prices up. The number of stocks put upon the boards in the large cities, particularly in New York, Is constantiy increasing. The fact tuat many o/ them are worthless does not seem, at present to receive much consideration. Few of them comparatively, perhaps, have a real vaine, aad even fewer would attract investments up) their own merits. The day will probably com when the false “bottom” will drop out of these Wor'bless stocks, and then there will pe nu merous mourners. ———_—~o2-—____ ‘The report of our health ofizer for the month of Mav, just issued, shows that the District enjoyed unusual heaithfulness during that month. There were fewer deaths by $9 than during the month preceding, and less by 51 than during the month of May last year. The datly mean barometer for May, 1339, wa3 39053; last 30.653; dally mean temperature May, 9%; daly mean humid- ast month, 62.3. Tue Prevailing direction of wind wa3 from the south during both months, but the datiy mean rain- fall during May, 1350, exceeded that of last month 1.51 inches. There does not seem to be difference enough in the atmospheric condi- tions of the periods named to have caused the difference in death rate of the two months, and we must accordingly conclude that we are improving In healthfulness. Tue death rate of per 1,000, nearly reaches the Touching the talk that the democrats of Oalo might make ex-Senator Thurman their candi- date for governor this fall, that gentleman writes to bis son, !n Columbus, that he could not accept the nomination tf tendered. He adds: “I made upmy mind when I left the Senate that I would return to private life for good and ever, andl remain of that mind.” Those who want to nominate Mr. Thurman are not with- out hope, notwithstanding this letter. Tuey think that i he accepted a position on tae monetary commission after returning ‘‘to pri- vate life for good and ever” he would not refuse the governorship of Ohio if handed to him on a silver salver, so to speak. And this, even though he might still “remain of that mind.” A good many politictans are like Byron’s heroine, who, whispering she would ne'er consent, consented. — The tpformation from Maine 13 that ex-Gov erbor Dingley, editor of the Lewiston Journal, 1s likely to be nominated by the republicans to succeed Senator Frye in the second congres- sional district. The greenbackers and demo- cats will unite upon a candidate In the hope o carrying the district, as thelr suecess in the effort may result tn giving the organization o the House of Representatives to tue democrats | next winter. Mr. Dingley, like Mr. Frye, is however, very popular in the district, and if he is nominated there 1s little doubt he will be elected. The election occurs in September.
