The Conkling Collapse. ‘The contest between Senator Conkling and the Albany, but some of the wires regulating this political maneuver will be worked from Wash- ington, The question of prime Interest now 13: Can Mr, Conkling matntain hig hold upon the majority of the New York legislature which is denominated as stalwart? In the recent sena- Torlal contest, before the legislature to which Mr. Conkling now appeals, there was no secret made of the fact that Thomas C. Platt was the choice of Conkling. In tact, the support of the ruling New York Senator was about all that Platt had to base his hope of snccess upon. The name and iniluence of Roscoe Conkling was used at every step in behalf of Platt, and Mr, Wm. I. Vanderbilt was induced to withdraw his support from Depew because it was foreseen that Piatt would be defeated for the nomination unles3 the Vanderbilt Influence went to his ald. Not- withstanding ali that was accomplished in . clearing the path of Platt of formidable ob- structions, he very narrowly escaped defeat in the caucus. Out of 105 votes, he received 54— just one more than was absolutely necessary— to 51 for the other candidates. There ts no con- cealing the- fact that this isa narrow margin for Messrs. Conkling and Platt to count upon, es- pecially after they have voluntarily resigned tteir seats because they falled to dictate the dis- tribution of patronage In New York. Oneof the truest friends Mr.Conkling has had In public life, aman who, as a Senator, in the past separated bimself from the reprblican administration and threw away all prospect of nis own political advancement, to follow and support Conkling, is credited with having advised the latter that he bad acted ke a baby deprived of a toy, in- Stead of like a great man; that if ne (Conkling) had resigned bis seat in defence of a principle the Country would applaud him, though it night not agree with him, but to resign be- One appointment to office displeased him Would not add to his great fame. Though Mr. Cerkling ig not aman to take advice, and 1s ald to have been especially displeased at sug- gestions concerning his late step, he heard what was true and what he will, perhaps, yet Tecognize to be sound sense, whon the friend referred to spoke. There is not the shadow of @ principle mvolved tn all this war- fare inaugurated by Mr. Conkling. re- lates oniy to patronage—to a single ofice—and when all the glamor thrown around the subject by mcck-heroies disappears, the people will see the one small thing at the bottom of all * this fuss, Reports from different portions of New York are to the effect that the people of that state already begin to accurately weigh the matter, and that protests against the re- election of Conkling and Piatt are already being formulated and signed. It must also be borne in mind, in calculating the weight of Opposition to Conkling, that State Senator Robertson will, after to day, be the collector of customs-elect for the port of New York: that he will step trom the state senate {mme- diately upon the adjournment of the legisiature into the collectorshtp, and that this will largely 1ncrease his political influence among members of the legislature. Tae cer- tafnty that he willin a few days more control the enormous patronage of the custom house, is calculated to make not a few of the stalwart members of the legislature, and especially such as depend upon patronage for their fature success in politics, waver in their devotion to the Conkling cause. All things taken tnto consideration, it ig not improbable that State Senator Robertson may be able to raliy fol- lowing enough to defeat Conkling and Platt for renomination 0 a caucus, should one be | helc; or they may decline to go Into c. be bound by itsaction. in whith case the cau- Cus nomineescould not be elected. 1a various ways the election could be thrown over untll next winter, and meantime a new legislature must be chosen. Upon the whole, Mr. Conkling does not appear to have a victory right within bis grasp, as y ——~+e-—__ France takes no halting step in her policy toward Tunis. implied threats of other powers are Gisregarded. When the Bey entered intoa treaty with pretended good will he was assured protection, and the advancing French troops were halted. With the double-dealing that haz marked the history of the Bey of Tants and all of bis kind, the latter sent a telegram to the Porte protesting that he had been overwhel by force and by threats compelled to sign the treaty. Immediately upon this telegram betng made public France ordered her troops, by tele- grapb, to advance and occupy Tunis. If France needed any justification of her course with re- Sard to Tunts the hypocritical conduct of the Bey would furnish tr. The latter, with the same sutveling hypocrisy, always protested his fnnccence ef having any hand in or knowleage Of the French border troubles. France found that the promises of the Bey did not protect ihe French subjects, and the rising republic determined to take that matter In hand with a ¥igorous policy. European nations may dislike the French Tunisten policy, but they will be slow to engage In @ quarrel with Franc? over {t, It Is evident that the resigning New York Senators are uot to be unanimously and spon- taneous!y returned to ther seats. There isa painful doubt rising whether they will be re- turned at all. Platt is estimated contemp'uous'y In the discussions as a mere cipher, and the taik now Is th: admitted abi style of man to repres mt the great tnterests of the state of New York usefully in the Senate. The New York Times, a paper not unfriendly to Mr. Conkling, gives volce to this feeling by say- ing of bis childish display of temper: “some effect wes anticipated on the sensitive feelings of Wail street. but, as a promtnent bank ovticer remarked, Senator Conkling’s views and actions have Lever had much welght in faancial cir cles. uucus OF ———~-____ And now It ts said that Gen. Both these rulers have recelved warnings of danger, and though these {ntimations may be unfounded, tt 13 not safe to sight them tn view of the success of the plot against the late Czar of Kussla.
