THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON PRIDAY........-+00--- April 22, ISS. CROSBY 5S. NOYES. Editor. i Whe Evening Star bas a regular, perma- treble that of any other srvend paper pub- Ushed in Washington, a: ai Cie ached acts pene Gore aalaea tac gether. ‘THE S748 office is connected with the Telephone Business can be sent day or night, free of charge. Notice to Advertisers—The Double Sheet. ‘The pressure upon the advertising columns of Tue Srar on Saturday last was without precedent. The number of new advertisements printed on that duy was 166. Advertisera will, therefore, confer a favor by sending in their orders at the earliest practicable moment, to insure inserfon and classification in to mor- ow’s enlarged and extra editiot German Socialism not Nihilism. The meeting addressed by two leaders of the German socialists in this city last night was the last of a series which have been held tn the yeading cities of this country for the deciared purpose of enunclating the true principles of that party, and of seeking American sympatby and ald. The methods and objects of the so- cialists, as explained by Mr. Fritzsche, a m>m- ber of the German parliament, are very differ- ent from what had been the general concep- tion of that organization by the people of this country. The socialistic platform upon which dr. Fritzsche planted himself seems to have very little resemblance to that adopted by, and contended for at the polls, by the so-called so- Clalists of the United States, and the popular prejudice in this country against the party and the name is due to the theories and practices of the latter. In New York, Chicago, St. Louis and other large cities ofthe union. where socialistic organizations have existed for several years past, the leaders and the organs of these organizations have Proclaimed the docirine thelr party name implies; they have contended for community of property, upon a somewhat modified idea, itis true, but even the theory was objection- able tn this country. The men who assume to represent socialism in the United States called and presided over meetings which botsterous!y approved the assassination of the Czar of Russia and prociaimed tn favor of em- ploying assassination aud incendiarism in all the monarchial governments. Itis more than Probable that these princijles and sentiments were uttered by but a few men for the sake of notoriety, but they went out as the voice of socialism. Mr. Fritzsche’s party, if his de- seription of it and of its principles and objects is rellable, 1s based upon a true idea of the liberty that man should enjoy, and an honest desire to achieve this by peaceful and legitimate means. He declares that the German socialists do not seek possession of the property of others, and also that they are opposed to assassination and all other violent measures; that they are endeayoring to accomplish reforms in the Ger- man government by quiet, orderiy agitation. ‘The masses of the people of Germany are borne down and oppressed by an expensive military government, which not only takes from them, in the shape Of taxes, their hard earnings, but Geprives them, arbitrarily, of their sons, even before the latter reach manhood’s estate. These youths, says Mr. Fritsebe, are torn from their homes to be corrupted in morals by army service, and made tustruments for the matn- tenance of the oppression of their parents and Telations. Notwithstanding the fact that the elections In Germany are not, a3 they assert, by any means free and fatr, it ig through the Dallot that the socialists rely Gpon accomoilsh- ing thetr ends. In the party prinetplea detned by this prominent leader of the soctalists tn Germany there ts considerable to elicit the sympathy of Americans. As civilization ha3 aa_ vanced, and education has increased through- out the world, the peazants of Europe have been learning of the Perfect freedom enjoyed 1 this great republic. Years ago, when the press was limited, and Its powers and Intluence restricted, the rulers of Europe were able to keep the great body of thelr subj2cts ta the = as to other ana better conditions of lite than they sessed. This 1s no longer possl- bie, and, r by year, the despotizms of the world are growing feebier, and the people stronger. The successful establishment Cf aprosperous republic upon the ruins of an empire in France has stimulated tue great masses of the people in Europe to exertions that will bear fruit. Themen of Germany who mainly ished the money and the biood to conquer France, instead of reaping any benefit therefrom are more heavily burdened with taxes and military exactions than before, and certainly the people of a republic cannot but sympathize with them tn their peaceful efforts to better their condition. With nibilism, and its repulsive doctrines ot terrorism, murder assassination, and the aboll- Uon of religion and the familly tles, the Amert- can mind, however, has no sympathy what- ever. ———---____ ‘The great dally newspaper of the future {3 to be a small newspaper.
