WHAT A MEMBER OF RYLAND SAys. A member of Ryland states that the action of the beard sbouid not be construed as a re- flection upon Dr. Deale, except so far as Dr. Deale is the representative of the presiding elder, and that the difficulty might have ali been averted by the presiding elder. Hostates that as far back 4 last fall ab Impression pre- yaued that lr, Deale would be appointed to succeed Rev. L, M. Gardner, under wnose three yeats term the church had prospered. They argued that Ryiant bad heretofore received {ts additions priu paliy from the young people: their Sucday- School having particularly been the nursery of ihe church, and consequently, while Dr. bale was 1 ed as a sound theologian and Preacher, they did not think that he was the man to draw the young. Personally, Dr. Deale heS many filcuds among those who odj2ct to his coming there, and there fs a feeltpg of re- gret that he is receiving the punishment tn- tended for another. They, however, assert that they cannot. 1{ they aie true to their prin- ciples. Lake any Other course. Before the late conference it was pel es that the matter Rad been satistactorily ar- ranged: that the presiding elder would accede to thelr request for a minister who had not been in apy Washington church heretofore. During the conference it was whispered around that Dr. Deale was to be med to Ryland, and word Was sent to the conference that that ap- potntment would not do, When the board heard ofthe appotntment they filed a protest, and after consultation with Presiding Eider Brown they lett with the impression that the bishop Would be heard from before Dr. Deale entered onhis duties. Thus matters remained until in the early part of last week the board wrote to the bishop asking that before he should decide Unat Mr. Deale should enter on his duties he should give them a hearing. Before, however, they heard from this appeal they learned that {U had been decided that Dr. Deate should go to Ryland.
