Rumor has placed Senator Conkling in so many altitudes with regard to the nomination Of State Senator Robertson to be collector of customs in New York elty that it ts fair to Conclude that the whole subject has been one of guesswork principally. The expressions uttered about the Senate chamber since the bomination was sent in indicate that Mr. Kob- | ertson will be confirmed. Should an attempt be made to bury tt in the commerce committee, which {s not very probabie, the Senate can dis- charge the committee from consideration of the case and confirm the nomination.
