The committee were equally fortunate fn the selection, as thelr trea- surer, of Hon. J. A. J. Creswell. His sound Counsel and untiring efforts largely contrih- uted to the satisfactory resuits attained. ‘Tne courtesy and ald rendered by Prof. Spencer F. Baird are highly appreciated, and are entitied to this formal and sincere acknowledgment. ‘To his associat-s of the executive committee, the chalrman extends bls grateful thanks. In: de‘a'igable tn their labors, th-y can confl- dently submit the results to the public, know- ing that each was animated by a desire that all ihe arrangements should be commensurate with the importance of the occasion and a credit to the capital of the United States, It may not be tnappropriate In concluding tals re- port torefer to the necessity, clearly demon- ‘strated by the recent inauguration, of a union Gepot in the city of Washington. Tue contu- sion, inconyenlence and expense te the pub resulting from two depots located in different Parts ofthe city can be attested not only by Our committees, but by our citizens and visit- ors as well. The need of a large public hall is also apparent. Through the kind and consid- erate action of the regents of the Smi:hsontan Institution the Museum Hall was obtatned for the promenade reception; otherwise a tempor- ary building would have been necessary at great expense. [tts hoped that our pubilc- Spirited citizens will at once endeavor to raise by subscription a sufficient sum for the erec- tion of a building adapted for important public occasions. Washington, the political canter of the repubite, would then, doubtless, be :ome tae place of meeting of all fmportant conventions, 4nd a return for the amount invest d would o¢ found tn the large number attracted to the city by such assembiages.
