THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON WEDPNESDAY.......Miarch 16, 1881, | CROSBY 5S. NOVES......Editor. | | gala: | y ice for a Political Millenium. The democrats are disposed to take comfort 1n the reflection that though they are deprived 9f absolute control in any of the departments | of government, they can exercise a negative | power that will be formidable. An aggregate popular yote of nine millions was last Novem- | Der so equally divided between the republican | and democratic parties that tt has not yet been positively determined which candidate recetved an actual majority, though the republicans claim {t, and probably have {t by a preponder- | ace, however, of only a few thousand votes. The thirty-elght states were divided equally— | nineteen for each party. The republicans have | the Senate by one majority, and counting the | three vacancies existing en their side, they | will have the next House by the silm majority of One also. It ts sald by those who have for years been prominent in politics that never be- | fore, in the history of this government, was there such a narrow margin between the ma- jerity and minority parties. One stroke of the | hand of death may transfer ove house of Con- | gress from one party to the other. ‘There is a lesson of more importance to the | country than the question of which party shall control Congress tn this nearly equal division Of politics. It may be read In the rapid growth of independent thought and action politically tn all the country—in the overthrow of machine rule and bossisia, and tn the desire manifested In every direction for a rest from heated parti- sanship and sectionalism. All sections are en- oying prosperity. The south, which naturally | ‘nd necessarily suffered most from the rebel- | ‘on, Dever, even ia its best ante-bellum days, | | | ‘Bjoyed such prosperity as now. The men who ere active in the days of secession, and who were wedded to the old régime, have, toa great | cxtent, passed away, and their sons and heirs, | + new generation, have taken their places. | bis young generation bas come into its tnhert- janee w.th ideas in accord with the present, sudeach year marks progress and increase of | ¥ eaith in the south. The people of the whole country, In the futlen- j oyment of peace and prosperity, will keap a watchful eye upon politics and parties, aad the ower rests in thelr hands to approve what is « proper and rigut, and condemn what fs Injurtous and wrong tu Congress, They care nota rap for (he few offices at the Capitol, but they do care for and demand legislation that will continue and tncrease Eational peace, quiet, and pros- perity | ———_-o+e-—___ ‘Tae proposition made some time ago by Tae. Star te publish announcements of births, as | well as those of marriages and deaths, has at- tracted the attention of its cotemporaries in all parts of the country, and in almost every case | not ouly the propriety but the real usefulness | of the proposition 1s warmly urged. In one | locality in the state of Matne, (the city of Lewis | ton), the publication of births ts nearly as com- | mon as that of Marriages or,deaths. So also in | Some parts of California has the custom pre- valled quite generally for a long tim, and there, as in Europe, its advantages are well understood. Asa rule, however, and strangely enough, ft may be added, the practice has gained a very slight foothold in this country, Iv was quite common in western Massa. | chusetts for a while, but appears to be less so there now than formerly. The reason for this, | as assigned by the Springfleld Wain, ts that | the Word went forth tn that section some time | ago that such announcements are not “good form,” to use one of the phrases of snobiom. “This ts a little curious,” that paper add3, “considering the prevalent tendency in this country to ape English customs, and tt can only be explained on the ground that the p2o- ple who setthe style here never see the Eng- lsh newspapers, and are ignorant of what the fashion there Is !n this respect.” In E the apnouncement of a birth {3 regarded as of quite as much importance, both to relatives a Society at large, as the Intelligence of a death or marriage, and {t will become so here i tme. ——_-+-___. One of the curious things tn connection with the administration of affairs of European cities, which are proverbiaily slow in tolerating | any change, ts the fact that severalot them | have adopted and are now laying down wooden Pavements in the carriage way of som? ot thetr leading streets, notwithstanding that be utter worthlessness of that kind of pave has long since been most conclusively est ae lished on this side of the Auntie. Tais13 | notably true of London, where, of ali other places, the wooden Dlocks would seem to be the most unfit among the most wasuitable styles that could be devised. they have been laid down tn Rogent street, tn the Strand and in Fleet street, which are | © among {ts most tmportant thoroughfares, In | Amsterdam, too, that wery citidel of slow | going conservatism, the American fnvention | bas also found its way, and on oneof the leading streets of that city the blocks have been laid. itis not strange that the experi- ment of wooden Diock3 should have been feted extensively {2 this experimenting | country, where lumber Is comparatively plenty | and cheap; but that they sbouid be abie to | make apy headway in two such old fogy | countries as England and Holland, ere | every block 136d must be tmported at very ¢oa- Siderable cost, and where other an4 better material must be much cheaper, ts most sur- prising. There must be some potent reason for 80 strange an Innovation, but ag yet no disin- terested person can divine what it is. ——-o+e ‘The prospect of the acceptance by the Ten- essee legislature of the bonduolders’ proposi- lon for a settlement of the state debt. 13 by no meas as bright now as is was a few days ago. ‘The debt-payers tn the legislature express en- Ure willingness to settle on terms “equal to those contained In the proposition.” but they regard It a3 4 stigma on the state and the debi- paying party that the vonduolders should re- quire coupons as security tor the paym the debt. In view of the past condhic state with regard to its debt, the people, even ihe debt-payers, should not exhibit too much sensitiveness because of being asked for secu tty. The manly and courageous tight of the debt-payers, regardless of thetr politics, s ap- | prectated and admired throughout the country; but the acts of the repudiationists naturally re Sect upon the whole state. Tae bondholders, saving suffered in the past through the bad | aith of the state, very properly desire somo } urity for the future, and their demand ought | ‘to De treated resentfully. Tue sooner the | {5 Louorably settled, the better for Ten- a The vaporing Diatherskttex Who cot court noto- ety by issuing acall for a meeting 1a New | York “to sympathize with the Russtan nihilists | and rej-ice in the death of the Czar,” are very properiy admonished by Ti Star of that elty hat Pages snd feathers are almost as cheap as t in New York, and@hat a ride upon a rati $ not so pleasant as a seat tn a lager peer saloon. | it not, however, to be left to a popular | uzst tO sUppress a Meeting called for so outrageous a purpose. The legally constituted authorities of the city should prevent it trom being held. The Russian people as a nation } have always been the fast friends of those of | | he United States, and during the late rebellion | | the murdered Czar was the one European sov- | reign friendly to this government. Interna. ‘tonal comity, therefore, not lesa than a regard «or the common decencies of life, requires that & meeting like this should not be allowed to be held. Artemus a met. ting things mixed about the war. is always unfortunate to get things mixed, but never more so than when one is sick: Then it is that the richt thing in the right place is wanted more than at any other time in life, or under any other circumstances. It is a pleasure for us to note in this connection, the experience of our esteemed fellow-citizen, Oolonel Samuel H. ‘Taylor, whe, as is well mixed. Ina recent commu do hereby certify that I suffered very much from Rbeumatism and neuralgia during the fall of 1879, snd tried many remedies with little if any good Tesulte. Ihad heard of 8t. Jacobs Oil, and con- cluded to try it; more as an experiment than with Suy hove of good results. Ican with graat pleas- urecommend it to others, for the reason that I know it cured me." Such an emphatic endorse- ment coming from one of the very foremost asyera of our state, well and widely known, nies with it a degree of importanca and restivences which cannot be overesti- mated. From our own druggists we learn the following, response to this wonderfal article Mr. H.W Burrellsays: Having sold St. Jacobs Oil for the past year, I find it the best lini- ment for Rheumatism, abd all pains in the limbs, I ever fold; and it gives my customers perfect satis- faction—having cured several cases. Mr. S. D. Baldwin remarks: My eales of St Jacobs Oll ure increasing every dey, and it outeells them all. As far as known to me, it has given good satisfaction, and several cases were cured by the use of it. Another house, Mees. Jackson & Thompson, report the eale of large quantities of the article, and find it gives eplendid satisfaction. Ool. Taylor, by tho wey, was stone time postmaster at Camberiand, Maryland.
