Wasatxerton, D, C., March 14. J. H. Linville, Esq., President ef the Southern Maryland Railroad Company: Dear Six: The current pubjication of gro3s and slanderous misrepresentations touching the Southern Maryland Railroad Company, originating as they do, In a source whose apec- ulative motives are as transparent as they are disreputable, renders the following statement of facts, at once, a matter of justice to the Com- pany and of propriety to the public, whom !t ks the purpose of these misrepresentations to lecelve. In the first place it {s to be observed that the claim of every judgment creditor of the Souta- em Maryland Raliroad Company. with the Single exception of a judgment for #250, and in- elusive of the claim which 1s reyreséated by the judgment tn favor of Starr & Kdenour for $5,000, has been fully and flaaliy settled elther In cash or first mortgage coupon bonds of the Compapy. The exception alluded ‘o 1s In pro- cess of instant settlement. In thé next plage, every bona-fide simple con tract or other debt of the Company, not reduced to judgment, has been fully discharged by first mortgage coupon bonds of the company. Again, the only mortgages existing won your road are the mortgages which have been exe- cuted and recorded during the current year (i851) to secure the existing issues of first and Second mortgage bonds, respectively, the one amounting to the par ‘value of $1,600,000, the other to $500.00. ‘The preceding Issues of ponds have been retired and destroyed, and the mort- gages by which they were secured, have Decn Telensed, a8 appears by the certificates of the clerks of the courts of the three counties 'trough whiten the road passes. These certuttl- cates Lave been exhibited to the uudersigued. ‘These fucts were perfectly well known to the author of the Hoeis above referred to at the me they were penned, I ukewlse perfectly well known to this in- genlous Individual tat the largest jadgment against the Southern Maryland Rallroad Com- pany. to wit: One for $31),000—was recovered in the cirentt court of St. Mary’s county, Md., on h of September, 1575, by the late Luke . This letter was evidently written at & period—some five or six years ago—when the alleged existence of abuses under a former organization of the company led to legislative Suquiry With a view to their redreas. ‘Tne rem. edy, however, was supplied from within, and action by the state authorities was rendered unnecessary. The latter, as we have shown, are at the present time heartily enlisted in be. half of the company. This is sigually demonstrated in the present instance. For example: It is not truethat the Washington city and Point Lookout Beatiroan company is the bona ‘ide owner of the judgment for $30,000; but it Is true, as we have seen, that by the lle- gitimate employment of the order above men- Ucned, it procured the clerical entry of the Juégment to its use. Axgalp. it 1s no! crue that the State of Mary- Jana 1s hostile to the Southern Maryland Rail- road Company or otherwise than favorable to its construction. It ts true, however, that, as a stockholder and with a view tothe protec- Uon of the Company, the State at one time contemplated judictal action (which was never, in fact, taken), agalnst former officers of the company, with @ view to the redress of alleged abuses. PROSPECTS OF A GOOD SEASON—GETTING READY FOR WORK. The indications about the river front are that the fishing business 1s to be opened early and pursued with vigor, Already the fisher- men areon the alert and are preparing their eeines and nets, and the impressions seem to be general that the season will be a good one, ‘Yesterday three fine shad was sent up theriver and about 500 herrings are arriving datly at the fish wharf. These latter are very large and lump, and are sold at fancy prices. Mr. Sut- np, Inspector of marine products, states tha’ he never saw finer specimens of herring thao the few arriving now from the lower river. GIVING THE FISH A CHANCE. TRE SEINE USED at Stony Point {s the longest one on the river, and 1s drawn and worked by stationary steam engines on the shore. The river at this land- ing 1s very wide, with a bottom admirably adapted for the seine, which fs usually five mitles tn length, and at one time one seven males in lepgth was used, High Point was formerly one of the best landings on the river, but of late years lias been unprofitable, Nelther of these landings Was fished last year. Chapman's Point and Moxley’s Point, both In Maryland, will be fished this year by Mr. Jas, Skidmore, also an old fisherman. He 1s now preparing: his paraphernalia and selecting his crew, aud in a few days will be at work. Mr. Skidmore has*been tn our market for many years and generaily has a great variety of fish from all parts of the country. Pamunky Point, Md., is engaged by Mr. Wm. Elliott. This has in years past been celebrated for its marine productions, but latterly has not yielded so well. Gut landing, near the for- mer, Will also be fished by Mr. Hullott, and the two combined will keep his force employed constanuy. Greenway landing, Md., a small shore which has not been fished for the past two years to much extent, 1s to be fished this year by Mr. James Smith, who has an ouuit nearly ready tome into operation. be White House landing, Va. whitch has latd almost abandoned for several years, has been rented by Messrs. Coprad Faunce, an old veteran tn this oe Vice, who has one of the best o4ttits on tue river. NO SEINES WILL BE HAULED this season at the landing on the south end of the Long bridge, but Mr. Wm. E, Stewart will occupy the place with his trap nets. Mr. Stew- art 1s also one of the best posted men In fishing and gunning, and has spent the greater part of his life on and about the Potomac and Ches- apeake waters. He will recetve on consign- ment all the fish sent up oy Messrs, Williain Kulght & Co. and Henry Knight « Co. Mr, Ben. Summers has rented the three shores on the District shore above Georgetown, and Will use short seines, POUND AND GILL NETS. Besides those above named a large number of pound and gill net. fishermen will be at work, their nets stretching from the Wicomico river to Mason’s Island,on both sides of the Tiver, a distance of at least ninety miles. It 1s to be hoped that the greed fur making money Will not result in another clearing out of the fish in the Potomac. The health ofticer,!n his annual report of this year, alludes to the exertions made the year previous in behalf of the Potomac fish- erles, ald states that the subject was carried before Congress, Which secured the passage of a bill designed TO REMEDY OVERFISHING {n this river, That law went into effect in May last, and was vigorously prosecuted by the police authorities under direction of Major Brock, The good results from ft will tn the course of a few years be apparent, aad no doubt thousands upor thousands of young shad and herring were saved from destruction. The clause in this act providing for a close season from sundown Saturday nights to mid. night Sunday of each week, will be productive of great good tn allowing the fist an opportu- nity to reach the higher spawning grounds during the season. This regulation wili be en- forced again this season by the police authori- hour's length, reciting the testimony before the pollee trlzl board tn the case ot charges of In- it ted by Mr. KR, against Policeman Barclay, \Uored at the city post office. It will be re~ macmbered that after a full heating before that tral board the cbarges were dismissed and the findings approved by one of the Commissioners, and it was at this stage of the proceedings that Mr. Raynor desired to make known to the Com missioners his side of the case. The Commis- sloners heard him attentively, but have taken uo action. THE REQUIEM M488 FORK THE EMPRROR. Farnham before the District Commisstoners yesterday Afternoon in reference to his abstraction of sewer bonds, has been written out by thesteno- srapber and was laid before tbe Commissioners this morning. They decline to make it public at present, for good reasons. Farnham left the city last bight for New York, where he came trom, and was probably glad to get out of town to avoid those made sore by his statements. It Js safe to say that this number would be multu- plicd considerably sbould his statement of yes- terday be made public, aud that those already burt would feel no better. He stated before he Jeft that he had not to take back from What he bad stated, and that he had now no motive for misstating anything about the case.
