Special Notice. ‘THE Stak will be issued on Inauguration day andon Saturday, the day followlng, in double sheet or eight page form of fifty-six columns. An edition calculated to cover 150,000 read- ers on each day will be printed, thus rendering it unusually valuable to advertisers. They will confer a favor by sending tn their orders as early as praciicabie. One entire page hag al- ready been sold to a stogie advertiser for Satur- day's edition. —_—__—__++-_______ ‘The Senate Organization. ‘The new Senate, in obedience to the Prost dent's proclamation, will meet on thd 4th of March ard organize. There will pe present 37 democrats, 36 republicans and two todepend- ents (Davis, of Illinols, and Mahone). There will be one vacancy on the republican side, as the successor to the late Senator Carpenter cannot be elected and reac) bere with his cre- dentials earlier than the 12t0 of March. If the prevailing opinion that Senator Davis will act with the democrats fn the matter of organiza- tion proves correct, then democratic control of the Senate will doubtless be assured, at least until the regular session of Con- gress next December. With the addl- ton of Mr. Davis’ vote the democrats will have 35 to the republicans 37, even if Mahone votes with the latter. The committees Will be made up at once and nothing will be done towards en election of officers, as the democrats, it is said, are entirely satisfled with thelr present organization. President Garfield's nominations will, judging by the general ex- Pression of democratic Senators, be promptly confirmed, and the,Senate will adjourn before the vacant seat from Wisconsin can be fled. As the House will not be In session, of course no legislative business can be considered; there- fore no business except that of nominations ‘Will come before the Senate, unless that body chooses to take up the Chinese treaty. In coz- Sequence of the one vacancy, the contest for control of the Senate will, unless something unexpected should arise to protract the extra session, be postponed until the meeting of the | 47th Congress. Light Last ‘The bill granting a charter for a new rallway line through Delaware passed both houses of the legislature of that state yesterday, and now, we presume, only awaits the signature of the Governor to become alaw. The opponents of the measure fought its passage vigorously, step by step, in both houses, and it was loaded With some amendments calculated to impair its usefulness tn benefiting the traveling public; but its friends profess themselves on the whole Well satisfied with the bill as It stands Col, McComb, who was most active in securing the new right ef way, says that the second road ‘Will certalnly be built, without unnecessary de- lay, by Vanderbilt, himseif and their assoct- atec. This combination bas as much flaancial strength, according to his representation, as the one which recently got p sssion of the old road. and jeans to maxe Its power and en- ergy felt. It Is to be hoped on every account that these pleasing predictions may be speedtiy veritled, and that the new rotte of travel will be open for business at an early day. It 1s one of the really great wants of the country, and hasbeen for years. Indeed, in a ilttle time it will seem almost incredible that tue vast Interests con- pecting the commercial center of the country With the rich, populous and productive sea- board region of the southern states, should have been held so loug at the mercy of the sin- gle line of rattway lying becween Pailadelphia ard Baltimore At the risk of Tepeating an oftea~ sul! much-needed warning, Tas Star again cautions the people of Washington to be on | the look-out for and guard against the bur- glars, thieves, pickpockets, and criminals of every class, Who are present ta the city fa full force. Already evidences of thelr success are becoming plenty, and the prohablility 1s that they will reap an unusually rich Larvest before the week closes, unless unusual care Is taken. Especially should proprietors and occupants ot hotels and boarding hous2s he on the alert, but BO one Can afford to be careless, The devices of the ungodly are many and varied. ‘The river and harbor bill, with the additional ‘Welght of nearly a militon dollars attached to it by the Senate, went through conference in a short hour, while the District appropriation bill lags for days on a difference of opinion involving less than one hundred thousani dol- lars. The questicn 13 not as to the necessity for the appropriation, but as to whether the District should bear half the expense of sup- porting United States Institutions. Another Subject of division, and one that produces apparently an irreconcilable difference, 1s in regard to the maintenance or abolishment of the division of the District government in re!:~ Yon to revision of special assessments, The Hicuse conferees tnstst upon aboltshmert, and one of them declares that he this point.
