The present syst-m of carrying telegraph | wires on high poles and across the tops of houses Is so universally pronounced a nuisance that even the managers of t legraph companies Tecognize the necessi of abating It. Indeed, it is becoming Impracticavie, unless the streets and houses of cities are to be almost given up to the telegraph. The extenston of wires to meet the increasing demaad for telegraph and telephone facilities renders it necessary to de- vise and adopt a new and better method of | running the wires, and @ 1s this consideration, nodoubt, which prompts the owners of wires to accord with the pubiic demand for the Temoval of the unsightly polrs ana wires, which are an eye-sore in every city. In European cities, where muntetpal regulations are more exacting and more rigid than in this country, the telegraph was long sgo compelled to carry its wires undergrot No difficulty, so far as bas ever been ascertained. was encountered In the adoption of an underground system that | has worked with entire satisfaction. The | Western Union Company and the New York Gold and Stock Assoelatlon have determined to do away with their poles and aerfal wires and adopt an underground system. The work of making the change wil] be commenced as soon as the mild spring weather softens the earth so that the n ‘ary trenches can be opened. It {3 the purpose of the Western Union to Inaugu- Yate the new system at New York, and to fol- jow along the main raliroad Hnes of Bal- timore, Washington, Chicago and other large cliles until all their wires in the thickly populated portions of the country are sunk. Several methods of conducting the wires underground are beng considered. The Eng- lsh system is to use copper wire coatea with gutta percha, all the wires running In the same line being tied loosely together. In Germany the wires are also coated with gutta percha, | but thus Insulated are made Intoa cable. The mode now most favorably considered by the | Western Union ts to wrap the wires In cotton tape, and tnsulate them by saturating the tapa with parafine ot. The wires will be run through tubes sunk In the ground, and these | tubes wili be fed with parafine oll by stand- pipes placed at the highest points along the Une. The people are not at all particular as to What methods are adopted, but they are be- coming impatient to ser some system put tnto | effect that will remove the ugly and, in time of | | Storms, dangerous poles and clouds of wire which overhang our cities. —— — The Senate bili for the erection of a national brary bulidiug ts, apparently, being neglected | im the House, and there ts room for appre- hension that it will fall.
