The Commissioners have made a regulation governing the erection of platforms in front of private premises on Pennsylvania avenue to be vecupied as seats on the 4th of March, allowing them to project five fet six inches beyond the building ine, 60 that two rowsof seats can be consiructed.’ The building inspector is engaged in nollfying persons occupying premises where there are insectire balcoules that they cannot be occupied ubless propels strengthened by supports from the sidewalk. REPORT ON THE DAMAGE TO THE LONG BRIDGE. In answer to the resolution of the Senate of the 14th instant, calling for a report of the dam- ages done to the Long Bridge by the receat Neod, and whether, in repairing the same, some method could be adopted that would Giminish the probability of future tnundation, the Commissioners yesterday transmitted thé followipg report: “The recent flood carried away three spansof the bridge over the Wash- pgton channel, a total length of 420 feet. ‘The injury sustained to the spans over the main channel, except to the lateral bracing, are com- ratively sight. The causeway between the Washington and Georgetown channels is not serfousiy damaged. On the Virginia side the track of the railway is washed out fora long Gistance, though the exact length is unknown. ‘The company estimate thelr losses on tne bridge and its approaches at $40,000, By an act of Congress approved June 21, is70, the Balti- more and Potomac Railroad company were authorized to ‘take possession of, hold, change, and uee’ the Long Bridge. Under thts authority the company will doubliess proceed to rebutid the wooden spans of the bridge as formerly constructed. The ice-gorge which formed abeve the bridge during the !ate-flood was caused by the harrow openings between the piers and by piles and other obgfructions, which are the remains of an wld br extsttag: before the present one was bullt. the recurrence of such gorges {t would be necessary to remove at least one-half of the piers now existing, to clear the intermediate Channel of all obstructions, and to rebuild the Superstructure with spans of at least double the present width. This, with the removal ot the bar in the main channel above the bridge, would prevent the gorging of ice at this point in the future. No method can be adopted in simply repairing the present damage which woud, be effective in preventing tnundation hereafter. The cure must be radical, and will involve the building of a new bridge,” popular a8 coon as its virtues are known to the macsee.” Weeks, cq., Town Treasurer, Bt.
