THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, FRUDAY. CROSBY S. NOYES...... a Evening Star bas a reaular, perma- | + bon. le dally circulation more than | | = bie that of any ether dally paper p {ished io Washington, and equal to that of all other dally papers here added te- acther. | ‘The Double Sheet To-morrow. Tae Stak will be issued to-morrow in | eight page form of fitty-six columns. The Circulation of the single issue was never 30 large as now, but the double onc of Saturday commands an extra edition of several thousand. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send in ther orders as early a3 practicable. ——____ +e In auother column one of our most active business men calls attention to what is gen- erally considered an unnecessary and extor- tlonate proceeding on the part of the telephone company. The same course, or some“hing like it, has been attempted In St. Louis and in some other places, and we observe that the people | of the city named have as a rule determined to resist the imposition to the extent of having the instruments removed from their premises. The same remedy is open to the people of Washington. The telephone ts a great con- venlence, it ig true; but the world got along very comfortably before it was Invented, and It Can doubtless do without it again whenever the use of the device costs more than it 1s worth as @ saver of time and labor. And this point many persons thought had already been reached under the old rategs,—so far, at Icast, as its introduction into private houses was con- cerned. But, however this may be, one thing is certain: our people have the remedy in their own hands. The public can get alony much better without the telephone than the tele- phone can without the public. ——~<-_____. One of the reasons urged for the extermina oa of our Indians, If they are not willing to Caange their mode of life and become agricul- turists, instead of living by hunting and trap- Ping, is that millions on miilions of acres are required to supply them with the amount of wild game necessary for their subsistence. Whereas if they were to become Ullers of the Soil comparatively few acres would support them. leaving the remainder of the vast area | they now roam over open to settlers and thus | adding to the wealth of the country. The argu- | ment is a pretty strong one, when directed | agatmst the untutored savages of America; but curiously enough It can be applied with equal foree to what may be called the governing classes of England. The amount of land in that country kept out of cultivation soleiy for game preserves bears about as large a propor- ton to the entire territorial area of the United Kingdom as the wild lands of this country hunted over and claimed by the Indians do to the whole surface of the United States. For exampie, one estate kept for this purpose contains 30,000 acres another has nearly 4,000, while a third foots up no less than 109,000 acres. We may add that the former of these forests was estimated, by a census taken last November, to contain 2,600 head of deer. The number on the other two estates is not known, but it Is not belleved to be so large in proportion to acreage. It will be Sald. of course, that a considerable portion of the land so reserved in Great Britain ts unsuit- able for tillage. This is undoubtedly true: but it ts equally true of the land in the interior of A. S. ELANDBAU & GO., Ne. 372 and 374 BROOME STAEET, NEW YORK. In Pennsylvania the situa- Uon remains unchanged. The two republican factions hold their own, with the democrats voting solidly for Senator Wallace. In Ten nessee it {g the state credit or regular dem°- crats who are now preventing harmony tn the | party. The low-tax men have withdrawn thet- favorite with the purpose of uuiting upon an acceptable man, but the regulars refuse to withdraw Senator Batley. The low-tax mem- bers positively declare that they will not vote for Mr. Batley, and as long as he remains a candidate there is not much prospect of the election of a democrat. -—____ Interest fn the trial of the land -leaguers at | Dublin seems to have died out. The cable dis_ patches make but Drief mention of the procee:| ings, and the concluston that the verdict will be acquittal !s general. The daliy audience in attendance upon the trials never misses an opportunity to express sympathy for the ac cused, and yesterday one of thé counsel for the detence drew tears from the eyes of spectators by his description of the sufferings of the Irish people. The trial of the traversers will from ine present outlook, end ta sometaing Uke @ farce If the House of Representatives shall order the mMvesttgation contemplated by Mr. Sprin ser’s resolution into the affairs of the tele- } graph companies, the People will be made ac- | quainted with all the stock-gambttug schemes and the other secrets of manipulation by which } milltons of dollars have been made outside of the legitimate use of the telegraph lines.
