Star has a reautnr, perma- nent, bona fide daily circulant more than double that of any other daily paper pub- lished in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added to- wether. . (SS ‘Tuk Stan office is connected with the Telephone Exebange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news,or any information or business can be sent day or niebt, free of charze. ‘Te Advertisers—The Double Sheet. ‘The advertising columns of THE STAR are sO crowded that advertisers will confer a favor by nding in their orders at the earilest prac- iteable moment, to Insure insertion and classt- fication. The double-sheet, in eight-page form of 56 columns, will be issued to morrow. The number of new advertisements printed in No- vember was 2003. Thus far in December, R350 Missouri e+ the Banner Greenback State. ‘The democrats have appeared to feel more keenly than anything else their partial defeat to Missour!, because they considered that the banner state of the party—always reilable, no matter what changes might affect other states. ‘The democratic loss tn Missouri was caused by the greenback movement, which, instead of losing strength in that state, steadily Increased untilitcan be termed the banner greenback State. When the first news of the loss of four Or five democratic Congressmea was received, it was searcely credited; it could hardly be believed that that state had weakened tn its political faith. When the democratic loss was confirmed, the next thing attempted was to explain the cause of such a falling off of party followers. After some discussion candid demo- crats now admit that the party Itself was re- sponstble for what it suffered. Two years ago the democratic state convention of Missouri adopted ak out-and-out greenback platform, and required Its candidates to preach that financial doctrine throughout the canvass. Hard-money democrats, though dissatisfied With the platform, supported the teket without ‘protest, for fear of injuring the party. When the convention met last summer the greenback theory, as a part of democratic policy, had been condemned and the party In Mis- sourt bad to follow the party lead and by the adoption of a sound-money plank, Inferentially repudiated its platform of two Years previous. Country democrats, it appears, bad not forgotten the unsound faanctal lessons So earnestly Impressed upon their minds In 1873 by the party organs and orators. Then the danger of the “money-power” wa3 pointed out in words of burning eloquence and the issue of more greenbacks lald down as the only means of Salvation forthe country. Thts year thousands of democrats in the state evidently considered it wiser to follow Weaver as aga!rst the “dan- gerous money-power” rather than stick to democracy and lose an opportunity of striking at this “power.” In other words the party leaders were not abie to over- come the impression they made as greenbackers, two years ago. In every dis. trict former democrats stood by the greenback Cause, and thus weakened the democratic can- didates. The result to the party is a loss of four Congressmen, a sufficient number possibly to have saved the House of Representatives to the democrats. This disaster contains a lesson to Politicians, if they would but learn it. It is that the people canxot be induced to face about with every political wind; that the masses are honest, and though they may be misled, they have some regard for principles. —\_o-—____ ‘The Virginia Triangle. ‘The readjusters of Virginia apparentiy intend to make a stubborn fight for control of the state next year, when a governor aud other state OMicers will be elected. The funders, though Victorious in the recent presidential election, do not seem by any means to feel confident of thelr ability to hold their forces in hand untit the next state election. They have already made one very important concession—that the State debt ought to and must be readjusted. It ‘Was naturally their advocacy of readjustment Which gave to the readjusters their party des- igpation. The funders antagonized them and called them repudiationists. The entire ight over the debt question in Virginia seem3 to have been an effort on the part of some of ‘those taking a leading part tn it to confuse the subject as much as possible. The term re- adjustment ts differently defined by the opposing factions, it appears. As advocated by one fac- ton it fs denounced as repudiation, while at the very same tlme the denouncers say the debt Tnust be readjusied, and call upon all demo crata to unite with that object In view. Behind the debt question is a purpose to get control of the state. This purpose 1s not confined to one Of the factions, but animates both, and it also moves the republicaa party. The state fight pext year will, in all probability, be a triangu- Jarone. The regular democrats, having aband- Oned thelr funding policy, will contend for a “proper readjustment”—whatever that may be—and will call upon all democrats to join their party mm the movement. The readjusters will fight Qr their kind of readjustment, and the republicans will, perhaps, attempt to win upon a stralght debt-paying platform. Although the prest- dential election ts scarcely over, the next polltl- | €al contest in Virginia has already been begun, | each party taking an carly start to keep the Others from getting ahead of It. Gen. Mahone, | as the leader and manager of the readjusters, | apparently means to endeavor to recruit his followers from the republican ranks, Present appearsuces indicate that Gen. Wickham will \ead the regular republicans as their candidate for governor. Gov. Holliday can, it he desires it, perhaps, have a renomimation at the hands | Of the regular democrats, and it 1s likely that State Senator Riddleberger or Col. Cameron Wil be the readjuster candidate for governor. | = | Judge Suell’s letter to the Chief of Poites in regard to the attendance In court of witnesses to criminal offences, published tn yesterday’s Stax, is astep in the right direction. Undoubt- edly it often happens that it is impossible to se- cure @ conviction In cases otherwise plain b2- Cause Witnesses absent themselves, for various reasobs, when such causes are brought to trial It may seem to be ahardsbip in many instances to detain & witness who may have interests in Other directions, but as a rule private constder- ations must give way to the public good. It is Just as much the duty of a witness to appear and give testimony against criminals as ft Is for the police to arrest or the courts to try them. This much 1s demanded trom and should be cheerfully given by every citizen for the protec- ton of society, and without such co-operation the ends of exe = be secured. ‘The tact that t the fire reported in one of the Cloak rooms of the Capitol the other morning burned and smouldered all night, and foally | PRICE died out for want of something further to teed ‘Upon, instead of being promptly extinguished, 8S one would suppose it would be, does not ‘Speak very well for the vigtlanee of the guar- ians of that butlding. Are there no night- Watchmen on duty there? and if there are, What kindot duty do they perform? What do they watch? so to speak. Brooklyn, a member who complained that the leaguers tn America are not enough to help the cause of thetr brothers who are + ruggling in Ireland, proposea that Gen. B. F. Cutler be retained to defend Parnell ana his ascoctates. This tand-leaguer seemed to think‘ atto turn Gen. Butler loose upon the Engit Irisb &-< would punish the Eaglish at the same Ume.
