James N. Campbell's Death. THE CORONER'S INQUEST. To-day at 11 o'clock, the coroner, Dr. Patter- son, held an inquest on the body of Mr. James XN. Campbell, mention of whose death appeared in yesterday's Stax. The jury met at Mr. Buchly’s undertaking establishment, 912 Peun- syivania avenue. Mr. M. R. Coomb3 foreman. Officer Michael byrnes testified that ne knew the deceased about 10 years; that a week ago last Sunday, Nov. 21st, about 3 o'clock he saw him on 4% street, just above Shillington’s book- store, and followed him to the City Hall, and found him lying tn the door way of the Crim!- nal Court room. There was a fracture of the skull, radiat- ingin diferent directions and extending for- ward and to theright over the eye, involving the roof of the eye. This Injury caused his death. DeaTt OF AN OLD CirizeN.—The venerable and much respected James Clephane died this morning at 12:30 o’clock. He was born in Edtn- burgh,Scotland,October 2. 1790, and was there- fore over 90 yearsof age. He hed been confined to his room but a few days and his death came naturally and peacefully from old age. Mr. Clephane learned the trade of a printer in his native City and assisted in setting up the first edition of Sir Waiter Scott’s “Waverley,” being se at that time in Messrs. Ballantyne's, St. Paul’s Works, Edinburgh. He came to this country in isi7,and was employed for some ume on the National Intelligencer, For a com- fon in that office he had the Hon. Simon ‘ameron. He joined the W: yn Artillery, and as a member of that body assisted in firing a salute on the last departure of Latayette trom Uuls country. Mr. Clephane has always been a careful reader, and his collection of scrap-books, numbering over a hundred, are grand memen- toes of nis industry and taste in literary mat- ters, He was also a frequent contributor to the press, and several articles from his pen in the way of interesting reminiscences of Washing- ton have ap in THe StaB.
