THE DUTY OF THE POLICE. Rev. Mr. Mason said that the District Com- missioners claimed that the police were not organized for detective work as tolquor. They claimed that they had the right w ferret out other crimes, but when this offense is men- tioned they claim that it {s the duty of the Christian people to fiud out violations gf law as to the liquor traffic, Rev. Mr. Litt'e said that the order of Major Brock this morning showed what were the du- Ues of the police a8 to one offense, and it ap- plied as weil to others. kev. Mr. Richardson said that the position taken by the Commissioners was absurd and a reflection on their intelligence. If the police- men would notice who went in and left houses, and summons them to court, in a few months they could break up half of those houses. Rev. Messrs. Mason, Richardson and Rams dell were appointed a committee to draft reso- lutions expressive of the views of the meeting asto the injustice of expecting pastors to do police duty. THE TEMPERANCE ALLIANCE, ‘The report of the committee on the temper- ance alliance was taken up. Kev. Mr. Wheeler urged the necessity of organization, and said that when the liquor dealers band together it Was hecessary tO have an alllance—a compact body, He knew of an instance Where a inan, Who otherwise would have stgaed a protest had refused on the ground that they had threat- ened to withdraw patronage from him. If this alliance was not formed from this meeting the temperance people would form ove. He moved that the committee appointe val the m: ing to form the alliance be instructed t9 call that committee at an early day. Rev. Mr. Mason said that he knew that when he came here he represented the moral p: of his church, and he belteved that the othe were here in their representative capacity. They bad urged that money is wanted, and o¢ knew a number of temperance organizations connected with the churches, and then in otber Organizations there were members of tae Christian churches. He would not give much for aby temperance bedy if the religious mem- bers are taken out. He had no doubt but it there was need of money that it coutd be g. He thought the motion to leave the inact where it 1s wouid be a wise one. Rev. Mr. Kamsdell remarked that he came into the movement because the churenes and Pastors were in it. He wonld not favor aa alliance asthe offspring of this meeting. Rev. Mr. Little was atratd the alliance would be cumbersome, and that if 11 was found the pastors wanted money they would have to go rc Rev. Will Olivia | explaln where the imbeciles and {dlots she re- ters to are kept? Those who are not in school fare little bétter a: Olivia’s hands. The “children of labor,” who, she says, are HOt sent to schoo}, are de- seribed by her as “embryo jackals.” Surely this is a deplorable state of things! If those in school are idiots and those out of school are “cmbryo jackals,” the prospect Is bad for the next generation. Let us hope that the effects of education are not so bad In the states as in this District. The idiot class, she charges, destroy all the flowers ‘within a certain radius.” May I in- quire, what radius? Won’tshe make an excep- uon of the flowers in Franklin Square which bloom the entire season undisturbed near the 800 children in the neighboring school? Olivia informs us that some school children kicked an old man ‘‘as though he was a pros- trate dog.” How this differs trom kicking a standing dog we are not informed, nor are we told time, place or names of witnesses. If the Statement Is true, it does not reflect upon the schools unless the children were taught in them to kick old people. Does Olivia mean to be understood that such instruction is part of the regular course in the public schools? ifind it hard to understand what Olivia is driving at. Her letter isan odd jumble of in- coherences, mixed metaphors, abusive epithets, commonplaces and communism, expressed in a slap-dash, go-as-you-please style, in defiance of | Ropero and rhetoric. What does she mean, for instance, by calling the normal school grad- uates ‘‘trained priestesses” brought on ‘“‘to keep the lurid lights Lees until tae ieouoclast work is done?” What lurid lights? What teon- oclast work? And what, in the name of com- mon sense, does she mean by the sentenc> in which she refers to the school system as ma- chinery, as a mirlatrom, and as “a mental com- plication of pulleys, files and teeth?” It publishing again Olivia wi submit her e3say to the criticism of any puptl of the grammir School she will find {t vastly improved in its grammatical construction and rhetoric. The oniy clearly expressed conclusion in Olivia’s letter 1s, that the colored peopie ought to nave DO schools at all; and that the white schools ought to be kept exclusively for paupers, every child being taught according to his t and talent. As this would necessitate a sapirate teacher for each halt a dozen pupils, will Oilvia explain where she would get the money?
