CIRCULATION FIGURES. ‘The Star will be issued to-morrow in double-sheet form of fifty-six columns. The edition of last Saturday was the largest ever printed at this season in the history of the paper. Sir thousand four hundred copies were sod (o newsdealers alone, This, of course, 13 In addition to the circulation distributed by mat] and by forty-one carriers in the District cittes and surrounding country. Advertisers will please send tn their orders as early as prac- tieadle. The number of new advertisements Printed in November, thus far. is number printed in October was 200 Considerable gratuitous abuse has been be- stowed, by one individual. at least, upon the citizens of Washington who by invitation took part in the Wednesday night meeting to me preparations for the coming inauguration. It will be well for the joint management to put a stop to this sort of tall if it is desired to make a su cess of the affair. The citizens in question have no axes to grind, want no office, and have no other motive in view in responding to the call to be present than toald in making the inaugu- ral ceremonies creditable to the city. They are the same citizens who have tor a series of | years been called upon for thetr services when there was any Uke det a public or national character, and they always cheerfully responded, both in the way of money contributions and down. Tight hard work. How heartily and effictently they put thetr shoulders to the wheel to make the Thomas statue celebration a success ts a fact certainly within the knowleage of Col. and upon this knowledge it would have been but the merest act of justics have stopped off the foul-mouthed tirade of this person Sypher against them. Up to this time there has never been a question of party in getting up these demonstrations in which the reputation of the city for hospitality and public spirit was at stake. Ours Is not a wealthy community, and it has been found requisite to unite the efforts of all good eltizers to carry out such affairs handsomely; and, a3 we have already said, the appeal to them has never been made in vain. They have shown themselves ready on this occasion, but are not disposed to stand a particle more of this vilification from mercenaries who do not know what It means to perform & dist aisinterestes di or unselfish act. ‘The «nestion of the th nited States Senator- ship from Obio seems to be narrowed down to a question of strength between Senator Sherman and Governor Foster, and present indications point to the success of the first named gentle- | man. We think it was the general expectation of the coun swe believe it was also the Wish Of a majority of republican voters, that in the event of General Garticld’s election to the presidency Mr. Sherman would retatn his pres- ent position. If, however, that, for any reason, cannot or 3 not to be, then If strikes us that the republicans of Ohio would not show their usual wisdom if they are willing to exchange on the floor of the Senate the experience, ability and special fitness for the place possessed by Mr. Sherman for such a combination of quali! cations as Governor Foster has to offer. We say this witbout underrating the talents or intend- ing to refiect In any way upon that gentleman. Only all men, and even all statesmen, are not alike, and Governor Foster could not take the place heretofore held by Mr. Sherman in the Senate. This much, wetakeit, almost any body will eon¢ cede. ‘The rivalry between the two ruling famill of Delaware—the Bayards and the S crops out whenever there 1s a high office to It appears now that the Saulsbar: to monopolize the U aatorships of Dela- | jonstration of | containin, | Hw for him to | pore | | | | { Ware aud retire Senator Bayard, but they 2 afraid that the attempt might lead to the over throw of family rule to the state. Theret Mr. Bayard is to be reelected without oppo: Uon, and Senator Saulsbury, hopes his acy escence now will make his own re-election easy two years hence. Upon the whole, tt looks as if Mr. Bayard ts strong enough to command his re-election, even though the saulsburys should Oppose him.
