WASHINGTON FRIDAY November ment. bona fide datly circulation more than double that of any other daily yaver vublished in Washington, ond equal totha of all the other daily papers here added gether. The Double Sheet To-morrow. CIRCULATION FIGURES. Tae Stax will be Issued tomorrow tn double-sheet form of fifty-six columus. The edition of last Saturday was the largest ever printed at this season in the history of the paper. Siz thousand ne hundred copies were This, of course, ts In addition to the circulation distributed by forty- one carriers in the District eities and surround- ing country. No orders from newsdealers re- ceived after 2 p.m. On Saturday. Advertisers will please send in thetr orders as early as prac- Ueable. The bumber of new advertisements printed tn.November, thus far, ts 612. The number printed in October was 2002. —~<+e-__ ‘The Inaugural Ceremonics. ‘THE Stak Is In recelpt of a heated COmmuni- cation, denouncing the action of “the self-con- stituted Inaugural executive committee, com- posed of Post Office employés,” in undertaking to run the inaugural eeremonies. While the tone of our correspondent {fs rather fervid, there ts no doubt that bis opision that the committee named ts not a sufficiently represen- tative one, will be generally endorsed. The gentlemen who figure on this committee are well qualified by personal character and exeec- nitf¥e ability to manage an affair this kind, have not been duly elected to tue The Tict government and the eltizens of the District should have a votce In the matter. fe and mititary organtzations ould b2 heard. The republican organizations, general and have something to say ‘The same of the different gov- mmentat departments. There 1s plenty of me before the 4th of March to form an tnau- ural executive committee that will be fairly representative of ali the interests concerned. AS a considerable portion of the work aud ex- pense of a proper tnauguration demonstration ‘talls upon the people of this District, it might be well for the District Commissioners or some of our well-known citizens to eall a citizens meeting to effect an organization in the shape of “a Committee of One Hundred,” or any other number of energetic capable citizens, who should be entrusted with the task of making the District share in the “Inauguration entirely editable to the people. ee If the published feports of the confession of two of the perjured witnesses In the so-called Garfleld-Morey Chinese letter case be correct, that matter assumes a graver linporitance and 4. baser character than was at first supposed. Morey, it will be seen, connects the nationale democratic committee and a democratic candi- date for presidential elector in Massachugetts with the tnfamou3 business, while the state- ment of O'Brien. alias Lindsay, makes 2 demo- cratic presidential elector tn Maryland one of his confederates tu the crime. It 1s to be re- sretted, for the sake of even a low grade of decency and honesty in politics, that the cor- fession of both villains cannot be shown to be as false as their original testimony is now known to be. Unfortunately, however, there seems to be little-ground for such hope. It is apparent the conspiracy was deep lald and extel in Its ramifications. It is also evi- ft that the acknowledged cu prits were only tools if the hands of abler and more unserupu- lous men, wbo sought toprefit by thefracts. Itis doudtiess important that justice be visited upon the two poor creatures now in the meshes of the jaw, but it fs far more important that the men who conceived the crime and urged Its commis- sion should be brought to the bar. It ts fortu- nate, therefore, that the matter was not allowed to drop after the election, as the Instiga‘ors ex- Pected and promised their dupes it would be. On the other band the investigation should be vigorously pushed from this time forward until every one of the conspirators, high or low, igex- posed to view and made to feel the extreme penalty of the severest law that will apply to his particular case. Other hearts beaides Morey’s and O'Brien's ought to be made to ache. ———$_—_—_-o>___. The people of Philadeiphia are crying out against ring rale, and a determined effort to overthrow the bosses will be made at the com- ing city election tn February. For yearsacom- bination of politicians has ruled the city, and une result fs a debt of $70,000,000 plied upon the population. The taxpayers are aroused at last, ada movement in favor of a people’s ticket comprising good men 13 being organized. The tiog is undismayed, however, and is preparing tofight to maintain its hold upon public at- fairs, ——~--___ And pow the people of St. Louis are disap- Pointed In the census of manufacturing inter- ests a5 wel] as that of population. The manu- factories of the city are not nearly so numerous or extensive as the St. Louislans supposed. It appears that tne census of 15/0 exagzer.ted the manufacturing statistics as much as those of the population. This second development will perhaps convince the people of the city that the census of the population about which they have complained s0 so much was correc Is dramatic criticism a “lost ari? “asks the New York Nei. We should say it ts, so far a3 the bewspap¥s of that city are concerned, judging from the sloppy gush—carefully pre- pated daysin advance—which taey published as “criticisms” the next morning after a recent dramatic event tn New York. . But, from the Tact that the audiences drawn out by the attrac. ‘Uon In question have been smaller each even- ing since the Orst, and bid fair to grow yet lesa as Ume goes on, there are grounds for hope that an analysis of the popular mind will st!) show “faint traces” of the precious article, as hopeful mining experts say of gold in low grade ores. The cheerfulness wita which the p paople otal classes and all sections of the country have ac- cepted the election of Gen. Garfield to the Praz- dency, and the very general expresston of the belief that he will give the country an able ad ministration, causes some people of hopeful temperament to prophesy an era of good tee! tog, politically, such as was brought about by the election of Monroe. Washington is the only map who was ever chosen President of the United States without opposition, bat James Monroe had no opponent tn running for his second term. His frst term gave such gen. eral satisfaction that there wag something ‘ke @ tacit agreement among the people to give bim a second term, and electors tavor- able to his re-election were chosen in every state of the Union. A unantmous re-election was only preveated by a single elector trom New Hampshire, who, though chosen tu favor of Monroe, refused to cast his vote for him on the ground that he wished to preserve for Washington the distinction of being the only unanimous President. As far as the voice of the people went Monroe was re-elected unan’- mously, but the action of the one New Hamp- shire elector interposed a bar to the entire unanimity, and the honor of being the only President who had no opposition stfll belongs to Washington. Gen. Garfield ts hardly likely to gain the exceptional popularity of these earlier Presidents in the present division of par- tes, but the chances are that his will have above the average success in the line since Washington and Monroe. ——___—_-~e--____ ‘The finest sugar crop that was ever raised in Louisiana is now belng gathered.
