ELECTION TALK DOWN SOUTH—WHAT BOB TOOMBS SAYS—HIS TICKET 1§ “GRANT AND EMPIRE IN *S$"—IDEAS OF THE YOUNG MEN—PROPOSED ESTABLISHMENT OF A GREAT NATIONAL PARTY— GOY. BKOWN TO BE U. 8. SENATOR. {Correspondence of The Evening Star.) ATLANTA, GA., Nov. 4th, 1880, ‘The legislature of this state met here on yes- terday, just In time to receive the news of the general result of the presidential election, Au were profoundly disappointed, some deeply de- pressed In spirits, whilst others have accepted the eltuation with good temper and hopeful anticipations of thefuture. The causes of the overwhelming defeat of the democracy are freely discussed on all hands, Some say that when the democrats were in power they pro- posed nothing and did nothing to perpetuate thelr refen. Others say that the presenc2 of a host of brigadiers from the south in Congress Was obnoxious to the north and west, Others attribute it to the treason of John Kelly in New York and to the free use of government money in the campaign; whilst a few profess to have found the cause In the chronic antipathy exist- iog between the two sections. What 1s to be done by the south in the pres- ent posture of affairs is the question greatly agitated by the legislators and people. Toombs siys his ticket is “Grant and Empire in $4.” One wing of the democracy advocate non-action in regard to politics in the future. But the other wing, composed chtefly of enterprising young men, contend that the time has come for The reorganization of thetr party, with the ex- clusion from its platform of all sectional fea- tures and ail the issues settled by the war, They insist that the only hope now feft to the south fs to engage at once in the establishment of a great national party, with a new name and a bioader purpose. This 1s likely to prove the sratcucord that Will ring througa the ranks of the rising men of the southern states frorn this time forward i All intelligent men here concede that the President-elect is a man of consummate ability and broad statesmanship, and J feel sure that the great. masses of the southern beopie will make no factious opposition to his inistra- tion, but will rather rally to its support. Many here are sad. and many are glad that Dr. Feiton, of the 7th district, is defeated for Jongress. All the indications now are that Governor Brown will be elected United States Senator. w.
