THE EVE G STAR. WASHINGTON. THURSDAY ......November 4, 1580. CROSRY 8S. NOYES.... Editor. fhe Evening Star has@ requiar, yerma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paver published im Washington, ond equal totha of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. OE ——————————— Tue 8Tar office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail an otherwise, news, or any information or business ean be sent day or nizht, free of charge. ‘The Double Sheet. ‘Tas Stax will be pubiished on Saturday tn double-sheet form of fifty-six columns. The exceptionally large elreulation of these favorite issues make them pecullarly valuaole to adver- tisers and news dealers, who are requested to send In thelr orders for the next edition at the earliest moment practicable. There were 2,002 ‘ew advertisements printed In October. Break-up of the Solid South. The overwhelming defeat of the democracy Will be followed by the disruption of the solid south, and it need occasion no surprise if some of the members of Congress from that section shalladopt an independent course in the next Congress In the recent canvass, with the prom- ise of the democratic leaders that victory was just ahead, it was found impossibie to hold the Party together im the states of Virginia and Ten- nessee. In Louisiana an independent movement was organized, and it has carried the city ot New Orleans, and in Georgia the independents have elected three Congressmen. Durtng the canvass Mr. Aiken, member of Congress from South Car- olina and candidate for reelection, declared upon the stump that the south was Iajaring its- its tame submission to tue northern de- and the most inticential democratic F Mississippt (the Vicksburg IZ-rv'd) hag almost dally uttered the same sentiments, and south to consuit its own Interests nd let the northern democrats take mselves, One of the most popnlar and prominent southern democra now in this city, says: “If | had my way, 1 would casi S electoral votes of the south for Gar- ne and inake the thing unanimous Our al- Narce witn th ern democrats gives them all the ha’-pence, and we get all the kicks. We have done all we promised politically, but our northern party associates have sold us out or . The northern democrats always consult their tnterest, and I am in favor now of the south consulting hers.” This feeling 1s not confined to any one, or to a few of the southern democrats, but seems to be general. They say that in the six years the democrats have had the House, they have given the souta nothing; that when an appropriation for that section 1s asked, the northern demoerats say, “for God's sake don't, or you'll ruin us.,” There ls scarcely as southern state in which there are not ques- tions of state policy in which the people differ more or less, but the united efforts of dem- cratic leaders, comblaed with the rose-colored $ of a national victory, succeeded in keeping these questions In tue background in the late canvass, with the exception noted Now, the dissatisfaction existing in the so} with the course of the national or northera de- mocracy. added to the interest on local qu s, and the patent fact that nothing bat de feat follows a solid south,.will oreak the bonds that have kept those states together politically. So faras practical results are concerned the proposed international exhibition in New York in Is no nearer accomplishment now than it was when the charter was obtained from Congress, something r + than six moaths ago. Meetings of thec >rators and also of committees and sub-com\_.ttees have been held, it tstrue, but notwithstanding these signs of life no substantial progress has been made. The jast meeting on the subject took place last Friday, when the subject of a site was con- ‘Sidered, but Bo decision was reached or seemed Probable, and the official announcement has been made that the question of locality will Rot be definitely settled for some time to come If it is seriously intended to hold the exhibition at all, such prolonged and inexplicable delays are greatly to be deplored, At least four months of valuable time have been literally thrown away, while the whole period intervening be- tween the laception and opening of the exhibl- tion Was no more than would be absolutely needed to do the vast amount of work required to insure sucess. It can therefore hardly fatl to happen that when the date for inauguration afrives the whole concern will be,—as neariy ifnot quite ail its predecessors have been,—an unfinished, chaotic jumble, from which it will take Weeks If Dot months of time and an appall- ing amount of labor, performed under the most unfavorable circumstances, to bring order and beauty. It 1s exactly with such enterprises as in a day’s work,—an hour of well directed labor in the —s ng ls equal to two at twilight. Counting Mahone,of Virginia, and Davis,ot Illt. nots, as democrats, and allowiag a democrat legislature in California, the next Senate will Stand 39 democrats to 37 republfcans. The result with regard to the legislature tn Callfornta 13 yet in doubt and should the republicans carry It, then the Senate will be a tle—3s democrats and 35 republicans. Gen. Mahone, though iueluded among the democrats, has not yet bourd himself toe that party. He has, on several oceastons, declared his intention to vote, in the Senate, “for the best interests of Virginla, regardless of parties. Should he take an inde Pendent course he will have tt in hls power to Ue the Sen: % Then Vice Pres eciding vote, Which we Difcans. AS there was no final taken at the last session upon the q of Mr. Kelogg’s Tight to his seat, {¢ Is still within the power of the democrats to vacate it and secure thetr hold upon the Senate ‘There ts no Ikelthood, how being adopted. , of this policy It cannot be carried out unless several democratic § rs, who have dis- Unetly pat themselves on record as matntataing Kellogg's legal right to his seat, stultify then. selves. ——~<-e —____ ‘The returns received from congresstonal elec- Uons indicate a republican majority in the next House of tive or six, with chances im favor of a dozen. The most favorable calculation for the democrats allows them 144 members, the re publicans 147, and 2 greenvackers. In this estimate the democrats are credited with one district in West Virginia, two tn sfissourt, one {n North Carolina, and one in Kentucky which are still in doubt, and the republicans are created with one in Tennessee, one in Pennsyl- vanta, and one {n Loufsfana which are still in doubt. Complete returns have not yet been received from one-half the districts throughout the country, and it {s probable that the final count will change a number, but upon the Whole It is not within reasonable probability that there will be changes enough to prevent a republican majority. There isa ufiversal feeling of gratification that the result of the presidential election has been decisive. The feverish excitement and Gaugerous issues of four years ago have been averted, and the people will now settle down to quiet once more. Business now commands pub- ic attention {nstead of politics, and an increas- ‘ng prosperity invites all sections of the country to renewed efforts. ————<----__ Isn't the talk about who will succeed Garfield In 18S rather too previous?
