5 a SS er THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. THURSDAY... --October 11, 1880. CROSRY S. NOYES.... Editor, fhe Bvening Star has@ regular, perma- mené. bona fide datly circulation more than double that of any other daily paver published in Washington, and equal totha Of all the other daily papers here added to~ gether. A Bouble Sheet on Saturday. ‘THE Stak will be tssucd to morrow in dou- bie-sheet form of fifty-six columns, or eight Pages. Avivertisers and newsdealers will please send In thelr orders early as possible for this enlarged and extra edition. The number of new advertisements printed thus far in October is 964. It becomes a matter of considerable moment to note Une effect that the Ohio and Indiana elections nay have upon the triangular contest how going on tn Virginia. One effect ts already apparent in the renewed energy with which the Tepublicans are preparing for the contest. The result cf the western elections has inspired them with hope and courage, while It has dis- Pirtted, if not demoralized, the reguiar democ- racy. The Richmond Dispatch, wading organ of the regulars, has procialmed for two weeks past thai if the reoublicans carried both Obio and Indiana, 11 would be folly to expect the election of Hancock. Whether the leaders of the regulars, or funders, will accept this as the sensible conelnsion, and act upon it, or de- termine to go on with the fight, re- mains to be seep. AS to the course the Virginia democrats will adopt, very much, no doubt, will depend upon the utterances and action of the national leaders of the party. If the demecracy of the country shall come up to the cor with the same sort of vigor that marked the republicans after the Maine elec- ton, ther asonable to conclude that the party tb Virginia will raily and determine to do its best. Should the national democracy snow relaxed €forts that the western defeat Is regarded as trreparable, then Virsinla will be lost to the democrats and carried by the repub- licans probably. Unless a reasonable belief that Il yet be elected remains, the ntest WHI be sunk, In Virginia, to a between the funders and readjusters for control of the state. Remove chance of winning the presidency. ana the Virginia factions will probabi; toral ticke nd the democratte faction—which esthe trade—shall have the repubil- give it power In thestate. On the should the democracy show vitality enough to rally from 1t’s defeat in the west, and courage enough to wage a determined fight for Hancock, it may lead to a union of the two Virginian factions upon a single electoral Ueket. It has been sald, of late, upon good au- thority apparently, that if the democrats lost Indiana committee would fsist nla, even though the reg- nould have to be retired, leaving TS mastersof the situation. If it shall s r that with the vote of Virginia Hancock might win, then it ts safe to conclude that eve be brought to bear to make that state safely democratic. It 1s too early ye to tell what effect upon th ational Germocracy the western elections will have, but It is net lthely the party leaders wil; give up the fghtnow. If they go into tt witha determination to win for Hancoek ali that is possible, then perhaps there will be a way found to bring the two factions in Virginia together. The white voters of that state are generally democrats, and they will insist, Probabiy, that their party shali have all the heip their state can give it. Meantime the re- publicans are pressing forward tn Virginia and Watching for any opportunity that may appear for a bargain with one of the democratic fac. tions. Still Squabbling. Tammany has out-generaled its rival, Irving hall, fn all the maneuvering for party ascen- jency in New York city, and the tndications are that the former will resume Its old-time Gictatorfal sway. While Mr. Kelly has Kept nls followers well In hand, watching and taking advantage of every opportunity, Irving hall has d by the ambitfons and jeaioustes ‘Ts, and some of {ts strone-t ad- any. There are how two or three distinct factions tn Irving all, each seeking to rule the organization and down the other. Either one of these it appears, is willing to form a coall- ‘uamany for the sake of a share of ations for local offices. In short, the pect is that Tammany will absorb tts old al plece-meal, and the Irving hall democrats Will Le reedy to seek Shelter under the protect- ing and p iwence of John Kelly. In the contenitcys held Tuesday for the nomina- tion of candidates for Congress, Tammany’s In- nS to its followers were carried out to e the Irving hall conventions nd divided. In the fifth district the iemocrats split and nominated two ates—Benjamin Wood by one taction and v by the other. In the sixth onight each other until the to be called tn. One faction nomt- S.
