THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. THURSDAY........... Ociober 7. 1880. CROSBY S. NOYES....Editor. The Evening Star has@ reguiar, perma- mens. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paver published in Washington, and equal totha of all the other daily payers here added to- gether. ‘Tae Bran office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. A Doable Sheet on Satarday. THe Sta will be fesucd on Saturday in double-sheet form of fifty-six columns, or eight pages. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send in thetr orders early as possibile for this enlarged and extra edition. The nunber of new advertisements printed thus far in October 18 495. —_+--—____ It the District Commissioners have authority to change the names of the streets in what was formerly the borough of Georgetown,—and a3 to this there will probabiy be no doubt ex- pressed and no valid objection urged,—it fs beyond question that they equally have the authority to change the names of any or all the streets in Washington. It 1s therefore greatly to be regretted that while they were the other day issuing the order in regard to Georgetown they did not goa step further and give substantial and proper names to those streets In the city which are now desig- nated by the meager and unmeaning appella- tion afforded by the letters of the alpha. bet. All the advantages of the alpha betical system—and they are neither few nor trifling—could be preserved by adopt- tng the plan heretofore advocated in Tue Stak. This plan, our readers will remember, simply contemplates that a full and appropriate name, beginning with the same Initial it now has, shall be given to each one of the lettered Streets. These names, it is suggested, should be those of distinguished American citizens, about whose historical importance and hold in the affections of the people there could be no ques- tion,—those north of tne Capitol to bear the names of men distinguished in the walk3 of Statesmanship, literature, the arts and sciences, and those south to be named after military and paval heroes. This classification would do away with the present duplicated, easily-con- founded and senseless initial nomenclature, and give to each street a proper, significant and eu- Phonious name, without sacrificing any of the advantages of an alphabetical arrangement. ‘The adoption of such names would, moreover. indissolubly bind up with the every day Ife or the national capital a part of the history, honor and glery of the whole country,—a point which Would not be overlooked by any other nation than this. . ——__+2-+-_____ The subject of our carrying trade has began toseriously interest the people of the Unitei States, and the agitation in behalf of a restora- tion to American vessels of their proper share of ocean commerce will be formally taken up by a shipping convention to assemble In Boston t2- morrow. The convention will consist of dele- gates from the leading commercial bodies of this country, and of men who have laterested them- selves In a revival of our carrying trade. Nat- urally, there will be wide differences of opinion developed as to the best means of restoring the American flag to ita rightful position on the -ean, but a general discussion of the subject must result in some forward movement. This is not a time to accomplish a great deal, because of the political canvass now pending, but after the election the people will consider this im- portant question calmly, and Congress will, Perhaps, find such a pressure in behalf of measures favorable to our ocean commerce that something will result from it before a great while. In commenting on the recent sale of the famous Stevens Battery at Hoboken,—whicb, it will be remembered, was built by Mr. R. L. ‘Stevens of that place as a sort of naval vessel or wall of defence for his native state of New dJersey,—the St. Louis Glode-Democrat takes oc- casion to express its surprise “that a man who knew enough to make several millions im trade did’t know that under the Const.tution of the United States it would b2 impossible for New Jersey to accept or retain his gift, no state being permitted to own a war vessel” Our cotemporary seems to be singularly obtuse in the consideration of this matter. It should know that men who waste their time studying constitutions and that sort of thing rarely have @ million dollars to dispose of, either constitu- Uonally or otherwise. As a rule it is your Sradgrinds who give up their whole mind to money-making, and don’t bother themselves about anything else, big or little, that come out of the struggle militonaires. Grapes and thistles are not plucked from the same branch. The supreme court of Pennsylvania has just rendered a decision that ts of considerable importance as determining the extent to which the press of this country may employ its free- dom in criticising courts amd the judgments thereof. The ecitors of the Lancaster (Pa) Intelligencer, oth members of the bar in that city, in their capacity as journalists severely commented upon a decision of Judge Patterson, of the court of quarter sessions, charging the judge with being governed by Partisan motives. The editors were arraigned before the bar of the court, admitted their responsibility for the editorial criticism, and were disbarred by Judge Patterson. The case was appealed, and the supzeme court has reversed the ruling of Judge Patterson and reinstated the editors to their rights and priv- fleges a8 attorieys. This decision of the supreme court has been universally approved in Pennsylvania, as putting a check upon the power of any court to interfere with the liberty of the press. ——————— ‘The disratch from Honolutu shows that King Kalakaua has “ soured” upon that distinguished cosmopolitan and d'plomat, Mr. Celsus Cesar Moreno, who lately undertook to run the H2- Wallan government for him. He has dismissed Mr. Moreno absolutely from all office, has ap- pointed a new cabinet, and the dispatch adis Uhat “great satisfaction prevails in the 1sla113 over the resuut. ————~___ The extracts from the offictal records givea in THE Stak elsewhere show that Gep. Grant has either been misquoted as to what he sald in regard to Hancock’s action in New Orleans, or that he bas made some serious mistakes of statement. —————~~-___ On the whole the Grant Interview upon Han- cock, viewed in the light of a campaign gua, ‘Seems to be a kicker, and likely to do more exe- Cution in the rear than tn front. —_—_—_—_—______...__.. ¥ FICE OF GEORGE RK.
