THE EVENING STAR WA hl TON. The Evening Star has a@ regular, perma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily parer published in Washington, ond equal totha of all the other daily payers here added to- gether. Tue Stan office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information Or business can be sent dsy or night, free of charge. To-morrow (Thursday) will be the cen tennial anniversary of the battle of Kings Mountain, and the people of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia are going to cele- brate the oceasion with imposing e2remontes, ‘That battle was one of great importance to the American cause {n the revolutionary war. The British troops had driven the continental forces out of Georgia ana Florida, and practically out of South Carolina, Gates had been defeated at Camden, and the struggiing colonists were d!:- tressed and disheartened. The victorious and elated British pressed forward, regarding the subjugation of the colontes a3 nearly accom- plished, when the tide was completely turned by the American victory at King’s Mountain. Cornwallis was forced to retreat, and the Amart- cans, with thelr spirits revived and more deter- mined than ever, rallied and followed up their victory. The King’s Mountain fight was the turning point in the warin the southern cole- nies and was followed by the surrender of Corn- wallis at Yorktown. The celebration of the c=tennial anniversary will begin today and continue until Friday. The program in- eludes orations by leading men of the surround- ing states, a sham battle, reproducing the origmal King’s Mountain engagement, and other military displays. An immense gathering of people is expected and fam!ites will camp on he ground where thetr estors struck such a decisive blow for independence one hundred years ago. ——<——$$<—<—<— +s Since the publication of Hancock's letter on southern claims, the character of the politica! canvass has undergone considerable change. The republicans are now making the tariff question prominent and are calling upon manu- facturers, with probably some effect, to rally to Garfleld as the only means of continuing the present protective policy. Both pariles are so divided on this question that {t looks like a dan- Serous issue to make. New York merchant whether republicans or democrats, are gener- ally free-traders or tarlff-reformers, while pro- tection rules both parties in Pennsylvan'a. The impression has prevailed that the free-trade doctrine {s more popular tn the west than io any other secifon of this country, but, appar ently, it is not the ruling idea in Obfo and Indiana, else the republicans would not run the risk of combatting it on the eve of the election. However, new issues will not, probably, work many changes fn elther party now fn Ohio and Indiana. The voters have no doubt made up their minds as to what they will do, and the element most susceptible to change at th's late Gay corsists of the chaps who watt for the last and highest bidder. Indtana ts so close, though, that even this element may determine the result. The managers of both sides are, no doubt, on the watch for this class of voters, who will perhaps enjoy the opportunity of selling out twice between now and next Tuesday. Mr. Parnell’s reception fn Dublin last Sunday showed that his influence among the Irish masses {snot on the wane, as his opponents have asserted. It 13 estimated that not less than 60,000 persons took part in the demonstra- tion in honor of Mr. Parnell, and his remarks were enthusiastically cheered. His speech, however, Was not satisfactory to the extreme Wing of bis followers, who belleve that nothing short of armed revolution will bring relief from landlordism. The Dublin assemblage of thou- Sands was an exhibition that the British rulers Of Ireland should have studied. A cause that would command such a turnout fn a single city isnotto be putdown by arguments in parila- ment and newspape! The land agitation ts a live Issue, and concessions will have to be made befere it can be appeased. es The report of the parking commission, given elsewhere, presents numerous points of futer- est in respect to the shade trees of Washington. which draw such general admiration from visi- tors on account of their beauty, variety, num- bers, and thriftiness. ] een INDIA SHAWLS.
