The Presbyterian Alliance. ‘The Pan-Presbyterian council, which asgem- bled In Philadelphia yesterday, is composed of representatives of all the various branches cf the Presbyterian sect. throughout the world, This is one of the most distingu‘sted religious bodies that has assembied either in this or any other land. The council comprises the names of the most eminent divines of the Presbyterian alth, men who have distingu!shed themselves as students and teachers of the Christian re- lgion. The mala purpose of the council is to bring the different branches of the Presbyterian fatth closer togetier; to concentrate the Influence of that powerful and populous body. Discusstons as to cr have divided the original church into a number of organizations or sects, all agreeing a8 to the fundamental dogmas, but disagreeing upon minor points, These differ- ences of opinion have been contested with Dit- terness in the past, whteh resulted In secesston end the establishment of new sects with the same general faith. In this country we have had the G14 and the New School Presbyterian, the Cumberland Presbyterian, and in other parts cf the world the branches had different names to distinguish them, but all were Pres- byterians. A f Ts ago, since the close of the war of the rebe the movement for a union of the Presbyterlan churches was inaugu- rated In this country. The proposition for unton iy response, and in 1370 the first of the reanited Presbyterian purch of the United States was held in Paila- Gelphia. The work of reuniting the churches im this country was found so easy of accom- piishment, end withal so pleasant a labor, that It Was proposed to extend 1t so as to bring this ‘erhood of all the world into ip. In 1877 the Mrst general ce was held in aburgh, and after a * session {t was resolved that the next iid De held in Philadelphia at this D d ability of the mintsters who compose the body and the importance of their labors, Where President Hayes Passes the Day. The President is today enjoying Callfornia of John Bidwell, in the northern part of the te. The ranch embraces Pg Of th> best land in California. Ey place fs upon a big scale. For ins are such items ag 10,000 fruit trees, 100 cows, 400 horses, 1,00 head of fine catile, 35,000 heat sh grade sheep, and hogs and chickens In counted numbers. General Bidwell farms in grain 6,0 acres, employs 200 hands, and can treat his guests at supper with the novelty of bread made from wheat which was growing in his fields In the morning, and which has been cut, threshed, ground, and bakea (and ail on bis premises) in one di His $70,000 house Stands fn an !nclosure of 150 acres, (a good-sized Eastern farm in itself.) which ts laid out in ornamental grounds, gardens, orchards, &c, Gen. Bidwell’s ranch also has the feature of a thrifty town laid out by him tn 1361, and which has now five churches, seven hotels and res- taurants, two banks, twenty stores, several Planing miils,a tlour mill, brewery, foundry, soda factory, engine house and fire department and public and private schools. Altogether, the President will at Chico have an opportunity of Inspecting one of the biggest of Callfornia’s big things. ———_—_«. ‘The greenback party in Indlana seems to be entirely in the control and at the disposal ot Congressmen De La Matyr and he fs inclined to use {t so asto secure his re-election. Negotia- tions were first opened wita the democratic manegers with the view of giving De La Matyr the Support of that party tn the Indianapolis district in return for which he would turn over the greenback votes in the state to Landers ‘The democrats, t appears from the most trust Worthy reports, held the matter under ad- visement for some days but did not accept it, though neither did they defattely reject it The republican managers were next offered the greenback vote of the state if they would with draw thetr candidate for Congress tn favor of De La Matyr, but they hesitate to make the bargain. In the first place, the democrats say, De La Matyr ts not able to deliver the vote of bis party to any purchaser. This is, perhaps ‘the reason the democrats declined to enter into the arrangement. The republicans are afraid that association with the greenbackers will hurt their cause and candidates in the east. They appear to believe that an acceptance of the be La Matyr proposition would assure them (the repubileaps) the state of Indiana, but Whether tt would be worth the probable injury the bargain would cause to Garfleld in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut 1s the ques- tion. It begins to look a3 if both parties will rural felicity at Chi-o, the famous ran Ger hold aloof from the greenbackers and that Mr. De La Matyr will not figure In the next Con- laim the support of hold the position of arty, and in urgtag this fers) insist that the read- his Neutenants have 3 with prominent re . pport ot colored » the readjasters have elaim higher than a k t (funder) electoral ave forced him to together with oth lature with the intention of enforcing tt Tegardless of the wishes of the mass of the demoe in state. The readjasters are Making the most of Gen. Echols’ contesston, and it will undoubtediy strengthen them ig thelr contest. A very large majority of the Voters in Virginia are democrats. They are houest in thetr bellef in and support of these Principles and sincere in thelr support of Han- cock. Therefore, all that would be necessary to defeat efther of the electoral tickets would be to show that it might betray its trust ana not vote for Hancock. The funder leaders under- Stood the force of their argument against the readjusters, and piled it well; Dut now the tables are turned, and tt 1s the funders who are exhibited as secret plotters with the repubil- cans. The confession of Gen. Echols will in al Probability secure the election of the r1e- adjuster Ucket by a large majority. —_—_~.-______ ‘The one hundredth anniversary of the capture of Major André was celebrated at Tarrytown, New York, yesterday, September 23, 1830; yet the memorial stone erected at the same place to the memory of that gallant but misguided thé 2d of October, 1s79, contains an inscription to the effect that “a hundred years after his execution this stone was placed above the spot where he lay,” &c. When such discrepancies Occur among cotemporaneous records of modern events what wonder 1s it that ancient history should be found a little halting and hard to Teconcue at times? oe While the graia crop of the west and the cot- ton crop of the south are abundant this year, ‘the report now comes that the rice crop this Year is the largest stnce the re-opening of the culture tm 1365.
