While the peace negotiations between Tam- many ard Irving halls, in New York city, have been interrupted, there 1s no reason to doubt that the democratic party of the state will act qn harmony In the pending campaign. Ia fact substan! harmony seems to exist now. In Alvany, t ‘4 and other points where John Kelly polled a considerable vote for governor, Lis followers and the Robinson faction have united. The democratic state convention will be beld at Saratoga on the 28th instant, whea Tammany will be formally received back into the party by the admisston of Its delegates. It 18 understood that the present state Cemocratic committee will not be dis- turbed, except by the retirement of some of the members to make room for repre- sentatives of Tammany. In order that no dis- satisfaction should arise over the displacement Of any of the committee three of the meimbers from New York city have voluntarily agreed to Jleld their places to Tammany. The only estion of difference that has arisen between the factier in regard to the chotce of a candidate for mayor of New York city. Irving hall insisted upon the right to name the mayor, while Tan.imany declined to concede ff. This difficult wever, will be easily solved, and, in fact, is virtually disposed of now, .osition fs Tne prop- ) select & Candidate for mayor, who fs net ide d closely with cither of the fac- tions. Mr. Kelly wants a reappointment as city comptroller. A compromise candidate for the mayoralty will be found who will guarantee him this will further agree to divide the Postifons at his disposal equitably between the rivalballs The republican managers ap- parently abandoned all calculations of deriving any benciit from a divided opposition. They have entered upon a cany nst the entire democracy of the state. Senator Conkling, sev- + eral week advised his party t have to tight the entire demoeratic party of New York. He understood that behind the quarreling factions stood the entire democracy of the United States urging and demanding unity snd harmony. While» the bitter feelings engencered by years of rivairy may remain in Tammany and Irv halls, the leaders of each Tealive that jealoustes must be suppressed for the prese hope of a democratic national administration, too, exerts considerable intlu- ence th behalf of unity. The aspiring leaders of the two factions know that they are being Watched closely by these who will have the @ power to dispense patronage In the event of emocratic success, and that nothing short of a complete union of forces will satisfy that power. All factions of the party will be repre- Sented !n the coming state convention, and the indications are that the unity of the democracy will there be made complete. The Dechne of the Greenbackers. The grcenbuckers, a3 a party, display a per- severance that might accomplish something if it were not for the tmpracticability and un- pepularity of their cause. In the face of the return of prosperity and a rapidly increasing trade, they have gone into nearly every state in the union with their promises of vastiy improving © the country if the people would only vote them into power. The fact that the comparatively few followers they had two years ago have mainly deserted them does not seem todiscour- age the greenback leaders, They have set up State and electoral tickets all over the union and breg and bluster as much as if there was really a party behind them. Even in Maryland, where the greenbackers polled at the last elec- ton only one or two hundred votes in theentire state, they have found men enough to form tickets. The result of the Maine election cannot be interpreted as favorable to the green- back cause. The fusion allies of the democrats seem to be composed largely of disaffected re- Publicans, who do not care enough about the distinctive greenback tssues to support the na- tional greenback ticket. In Indiana the man- agers of both the republican and democratic canvasces agree that the greenback vote will fall off from forty to fifty per cent from that cast In 187s. In Ohio, at the election of last year, the greenbackers polled enly 9,072 votes, and no reliable estimate accords them any greater number this year. Notwithstanding the adverse circumstances, Gen. Weaveratumps state after state, and assures interviewers that his party will have at least 30 or 40 members in the next Congress, and will hold the balance of power. There ts really nothing upon which Such a prediction can be based. In Iowa, two of the greenbackers of the present House (one of them Weaver himself) will be succeeded by ci because the democrats of those running Candidates of their own. The greenback member from Alabama has already retired from the race and left the fleld to ademocrat. The North Carolina greenback member bas come out for Hancock, but even that will not re-elect him, as the district ts democratic by a large majority. The present indications are that the two members just re- lected in Matne will constitute the greenback party in the next House, in spite of the profuse premises and wild boastings of that party.
